a montreal bagel in {brooklyn}…

When I heard about Boerum Hill's Mile End, I had no idea what this "Montreal Jewish Delicatessen" would have in store for me. Low and behold, this may have been one of the best bagel experiences of my life. Having had lived in New York for many years, I've had my fair share of New York bagels {the best in the States if you ask me}. But I've never laid my eyes or taste buds on the Montreal style bagel.

Montreal Bagels are hand rolled, par-boiled in a honey infused water, and then baked in a wood-burning oven. I'd describe the texture as somewhere in-between a bagel and a soft pretzel…dense, yet chewy…crispy and soft. Amazing.

  1. Mmmm Montreal bagels ARE the best around! I have family up there and its a must to buy at least a dozen bagels every time we go to visit. When they’re fresh out of the oven, I can’t resist eating a couple, plain and right out of the bag – so good!

  2. I’ll eat anything if there are capers on it! This makes me a sad Californian…that NY bagel looks amazing.

  3. Amazing indeed. Mtl isn’t far from Brooklyn, come on over to Quebec!! They freeze really well too, buy a dozen or two, you will not regret… I am sure that this would be followed by a post on how to make them!

  4. i was there last month as my friends live right around the corner on dean… they WERE a yummy delight! fun to see them here!

  5. oh my goodness omy goodness! this makes me sooo happy. having lived and gone to college in montreal (McGill U.) for 4 years, i fell in love with these bagels. now, when i visit my sister in brooklyn, i can have a piece of montreal with me too!
    THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!

  6. Hmmm…..memories of when I lived in Montreal.
St. Viateur–24 hours of bagel goodness any time of day or night–there is nothing like a Montreal bagel.

  7. Too funny, I was in NY a couple of weeks ago and you hit two of my three favorite places that I tried. The dessert at Laconda Verde was insane. The pastrami at Mile End, on the cute little rye bread, was amazing. And the fried chicken at Buttermilk Channel in Brooklyn was some of the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. You must go there next time you are in NY!

  8. Oh my GOD that looks so good – a bagel with all that stuff is one of my favorite things to eat – I can’t wait till we go to NYC in December to get one!

  9. yum! i’ve had these at the hester street fair too, i think it’s so cool that they drive them down from montreal every week 🙂

  10. If you ever pay a visit to Montreal, you have to go to Mount Royal Bagel! They have the best bagels ever..soo good! Wins my heart over any Montreal bagel. They are located at 709 Lucerne in the town of mount royal, but they also ship to anywhere, so you don’t even need to come all the way to Montreal for this indulgence. They have a toll free number 1-877- LEBAGEL, catchy eh? Website is http://www.mountroyalbagelbakery.com to see all the different kinds, they really think of everything and redefine the bagel.

  11. whoever posted about mount royal bagel – you are my hero. im so happy that someone else has found this place as well. mount royal bagels are truly the best in montreal and its such a shame that their name isnt as out there as st.viateurs and fairmonts. everyone try this place and become one of us who know the good stuff and get to experience montreals finest

  12. I love Mount Royal Bagel, their bagels are so incredible, mouth watering, delicious, unique and always hot out of the oven!
