flower fun…

Last night, I attended the first LA workshop by Sarah & Nicolette of Brooklyn's Little Flower School. I've been a huge fan of their work for a long time so it was so fun to have a night to learn some floral tips and tricks from them at the Ban.do studio. At the work tables, we were greeted with our own vase to use for the night's arrangement, a floral frog, our own set of shears, some sweet treats, and of course, a mini Ban.do heart {from our hosts for the night}.

And then, this table full of the flowers we could work with. I felt my heart racing…like a kid in a candy shop…

Nicolette and Sarah gave us the 411 on all the flowers and then had demo of their process and how we should work layer by layer, creating "moments" of color and shape in the florals.

Finally, by the end of the evening, we all had an arrangement {mine shown above} of our very own. As a graphic designer, I had a hard time with the organic process and not having things so precise. But that's exactly what I love about their style and why I loved their class so much. There's theory and shape and color to be considered, but a lot of it is just going with what feels right and evolving it as it goes. SO much fun! Thanks again to Nicolette & Sarah for the awesome class! — Joy

  1. Isn’t it the most fun? I’d go to as many classes I can get my hands on, just because.
And it has less to do with precision and symmetry … than deliberate asymmetry? Think ‘picturesque’!
Although I’d take a little ban.do action as a perk to any class.

  2. Joy: What a pleasure it was meeting you last night! The class was so much fun & your arrangement is gorgeous–love the wild, tumbling energy of it. BTW, would you like some recommendations on delicious places for ethnic food in LA?
Tish: Worth every penny if you can afford it. What you learn from the hands-on experience, guided by talented girls like Nicolette & Sarah is priceless. You get to work with an assortment of about 20 different flowers/plants which is something not many of us can afford to do on our own anyway. Plus there’s bubbly in the end!

  3. These arrangements are beautiful!
But, I thought this post was going to be about something completely different, and I was so surprised you would cover something like this. You see, we were so sad to find out recently that my mom’s elementary school will be closing. She went to Little Flower School. A parochial school in Brooklyn.
    You can understand my confusion…

  4. Yay! I’m attending tonight’s class! The classes filled up so quickly that it was pure luck that I caught their post and snagged 1 of the last 2 remaining spots. I’m so excited to learn from the talented artists Sarah and Nicolette. Your review was the perfect taste to whet my appetite.

  5. Haha I understand what you mean about being a graphic designer. I always try to make paintings and when I’m done it looks an Illustrator drawing. We need to loosen up!

  6. Looks like you handled that arrangement like a pro! I know what you mean about not being able to get it precise. I’m a graphic artist as well and have attempted floral arranging and well, they don’t turn out as nice as yours lets just say. Love the colors!!!

  7. Wow! Your arrangement is so beautiful! You are practically a professional now! I want to go to flower schoool! Maybe I can find something similar in the Chattanooga area!
    Great job!

p.s. I think I, too, would have had a flower-induced heart attack upon entering the store!

  8. Your arrangement looks great – Sometimes you have to get past everything being perfect and just go for it, and your final results are just amazing. The colours are very calming, beautiful. Are you sure you havent done this before? xxx
