While many of my snacks are of the sweet and chocolate-y kind, I'm also a huge fan of citrus fruit…especially rare breeds like blood oranges, pomelos, and yuzu. My current favorite is the sumo mandarin, a cross between an orange and a tangerine, and the size of a large orange. It's super juicy, both sweet & tart, and barely has any seeds. It's also super easy to peel thanks to the giant nubbin up top. So far, I've only been able to find them at Whole Foods and have been loading up for a refreshing treat! — Joy

Looks delicious! And I agree; your photos are so pretty. I suddenly find myself craving a juicy sumo mandarin.
Oooh that sounds really good! I’m not usually a citrus fan but I might have to make an exception for this fruit! 🙂
They are super tasty! You can find them at many Asian supermarkets (http://articles.latimes.com/2011/feb/17/food/la-fo-dekopon-20110217/4) and for cheaper!! I get them from my local japanese market and they were close to a dollar less a pound than when I bought them from Whole Foods
Thanks Celeste for the tip! 😉

LOVE citrus fruits. Just made some fresh squeezed OJ this morning. It was so much better than anything out of the carton!xx

Have you had Orange chocolate? Sooo good and I think you’d like it.
I just bought some of these last night!
I’ve never heard of these! Will definitely have to try some now, thanks Joy!
That looks so delicious! I have not had citrus in a long time, and this motivates me to go buy some. Thanks!

That looks delicious! We just harvested a bunch of tangelos from our backyard on a tree thought long for dead (One reason to be happy for all the rain here in L.A.) They’re both sweet and tart and ridiculously juicy.. which also makes for some tasty cocktails.
Scandalous story on the budwood of this fruit on KCRW’s Good Food.. http://www.kcrw.com/etc/programs/gf/gf110219african-american_foo
funny!
Thanks Amanda!
Heres a list of where you can get them in the LA area, folks!

AH, a snack that doesn’t ruin my sugar swear-off. I actually have two on my desk right now 🙂
I’m so pleased to see a savoury snack! I was starting to worry about your cholesterol levels! x
Yum! I went through a phase last summer of trying fruit I had never had before…my fav was black grapes!! Can’t wait to try out a sumo mandarin now!
SO wild! I just tasted this today at my Whole Foods. DELISH!

I’ve never heard of this before. But what a fun name. I definitely want to find it and try it now. :]
did you know the word “sumo” means juice in portuguese? funny, being an orange! 🙂
It looks so sweet and delicious! I had a bunch of them last Chinese New Year! Great pics too!
had a sumo for the first time, and all i can say is WOOOOOW. so. effing. juicy!
Yay! Mandarin for good. Love it.
They had a great interview with David Karp this morning on NPR discussing the Sumo. I can’t find it on their site, but thought I’d share the corresponding article: http://lat.ms/eeMPvh
His descriptions make them sound like heaven! Can’t wait to get my hands on one.
We call these tangelos here in Texas, they’re my FAVE!
Looking at it you just desire to have one. Here in the market the mandarins taste like unsalted straw :/
