the name game…

Mama Baby Bump

Mama Baby Bump

Now that we're preparing for another little girl in our family, it's time to figure out what her name will be! I never thought about having to think of another girl's name. I loved the name "Ruby" for so long and got to use it the first time around, so we're a little stumped this time. Bob and I have a couple names we've tossed around but nothing that's 100% yet.

Do you guys have any suggestions for us that would be a good name for Ruby's little sister? I'm all ears! We're open to hearing any ideas!

P.S. This photo is from last night when Ruby decided she wanted a baby in her belly and spent the whole night during dinner keeping "the baby" safe in her dress.

{Photo by Oh Bob. Ruby at 2.5 years, baby bump at 22 weeks. My top is Liz Lange for Target, shorts are from ASOS}

  1. I think Lily is such a pretty name! It´s a short name, like Ruby, and it´s girlie and delicate, so here´s my suggestion 🙂

  2. Also keeping with the gemstone theme … Amy (short for Amethyst) or Gemma (which can be shortened to Gem). Otherwise, Anna or Lucy.
    P.S. That photo is adorable.

  3. Here are my favorites! We chose Lily for this one (32 weeks preggo) and fell in love with it but our other options were: Sailor, Amelie, Charlie, Nora, Tessa (my name, I wouldn’t name my daughter after me but I have loved having my name be my name!), Fiona, Flora. Good luck, I hope when you see the right one it just jumps out at you and makes the whole process easier!

  4. My daughters are Isabella and Eloise – other children in particular seem to love saying the name Eloise, there must be something very pleasing about the way it trips off the tongue! I also love the name Coralie – and there’s kind of a link with Ruby (Coral) but it’s subtle…

  5. Sisters, yay!!! Since you love color, how about Violet and Ruby? My daughter’s name is Anya which I also love as it has meaning in so many different cultures.

  6. Evany, Eva, Evie, Ivy, Lila, Lydia and Georgia are my favorites.
P.S. You and Ruby have the cutest baby bumps!

  7. Ok I was going to be goofy and go with Pearl, but someone got to it before me. The name is great, but I think that might be a little too on the nose, and might make Ruby and her sister seem like a set, rather than individual little nerds.
That said, I have no real recommendations. I love names like Edith and Cornelia, so…yeah.

  8. How about Isla, Dot, Emmeline, Cleo/Clio, Mae/May, Nora, Phoebe, Luna, Elsie, Mabel, Frankie, Frieda, Sadie, Hazel, Stella, Gia, Lotus, Quilla, Nina, Adele, Clea, Posy, Zanna, Orla, Iris, Freya, Annabel, Clementine, Anouk, Maya, Kiki, Lucy, Imogen, Natalia, Coco, Blythe, Darcy, Edie, Greta, Hattie, Jane, Lilia, Minna, Paloma, Romy, Tallulah, Wren, or Amelie?

  9. sisters are the best 🙂 my two girls are audrey and juliette … and i love eloise and genevieve also. and if we had another, she would have been pascale.

  10. Someone said Lily and that jumped out at me as the perfect name for your baby! (Like i’m somehow entitled to impose my opinion on you). Lily Cho and Ruby Cho – i think they sound so sweet.
Didn’t the site You Can’t Call It It recommend something like Pearl or Opal for you?

  11. I can totally see you having a Poppy. My middle name is Iris, though, and I can equally imagine an Iris Cho existing. 🙂

  12. Nina and Tess, although Tess Cho is not too easy to say now that I think of it. Pretty names anyway, wish I’d used them. Love your blog, Joy! I’ve been a follower since you were planning your wedding. So happy to see all of your success.

  13. I love the name Pearl or it’s variation, Perla! Also, my daughter’s name is Nina and if I were to ever have another girl, I’d name her Evie! So in similar fashion, I’d find something that compliments the sound of Ruby, but still completely unique, like June, Juliette/Julianna, Lucy, or Lulu.

  14. Dani (short for Danielle). Goes well with Ruby 🙂
Other ideas: Julie, Jenny, Rosie or just Rose, Lucy, Penny, Lorelai (Rory), Madelyn (Maddie)…
    Congrats!

  15. My favorite site for all things baby names is Baby Name Wizard. Lots of great tools and an excellent blog. I’m not gonna try and suggest a name; that’s quite a personal decision!

  16. I hope I’ll be able to use the name “Emma” for a little girl one day, that’s my all time favorite…
that said I support the “Lily Cho” campaign! It sounds gorgeous, sweet and femenine! You’re a lucky girl! 🙂

  17. My girls are Alex and Audrey. I like that Alex is a bit of a masculine name to balance out the ultra-feminine Audrey. Perhaps you need something with a little tomboy charm to pair with the very ladylike Ruby. Maybe Charlie or Lane? Great names on their own and sounds darling with Ruby. Good Luck!

  18. My girls are June Lilly and Maggie Pearl. I am Kimberly Rose and wanted flower middle names for both of my daughters, but after hearing Pearl I knew it was a perfect middle name and now they each are special 🙂

  19. Congrats! I love this picture. So cute.
How about Opal? I came across that name in a book once and it really grew on me.

  20. What about Paloma? We’re expecting our first, and our last name is so long I have to stick with short names, but I LOVE the name Paloma so much! It sounds nice with Cho, and with her sister’s name, Ruby. 🙂

  21. We are fans of June too! Crossing my fingers that our next one is a girl so I finally get to use it! 🙂

  22. I love Marigold, nickname “Goldie”, but I have a sweet little Sylvie so I couldn’t have Goldie and Sylvie :). Matilda, Lorelei, Juniper “Junie”, Juliet, Mabel, Ivy

  23. We almost named our daughter Ruby Mae… so maybe Mae would be a good name. We ended up naming her Danika Mae and we love it. Call her Dani. Good luck!

  24. How about Sylvia? It’s similar to Olivia but not so common. I also think it goes well with Ruby.

  25. How about Sylvia? It’s similar to Olivia but not so common. I also think it goes well with Ruby.

  26. How about Sylvia? It’s similar to Olivia but not so common. I also think it goes well with Ruby.

  27. How about Sylvia? It’s similar to Olivia but not so common. I also think it goes well with Ruby.

  28. How about Sylvia? It’s similar to Olivia but not so common. I also think it goes well with Ruby.

  29. How about Sylvia? It’s similar to Olivia but not so common. I also think it goes well with Ruby.

  30. How about Sylvia? It’s similar to Olivia but not so common. I also think it goes well with Ruby.

  31. How about Sylvia? It’s similar to Olivia but not so common. I also think it goes well with Ruby.

  32. How about Sylvia? It’s similar to Olivia but not so common. I also think it goes well with Ruby.

  33. How about Sylvia? It’s similar to Olivia but not so common. I also think it goes well with Ruby.

  34. My daughters are Matilda Grace and Sadie Eloise. People stop us all the time to comment on how much they like them!

  35. My girls are Ava (7), Lola (3) and Mathilde (2 months).
My husband and I had no idea what Mathilde’s name would be until after she was born. It was a toss up between Mathilde and Edie and we loved both names equally. We had originally chosen the name Elsa for her but then the movie Frozen came out and I just knew that there would be a tonne of Elsas born this year. Sure enough the name Elsa has seen a huge increase in popularity.
Our oldest daughter Ava has to deal with there being another Ava in almost every class or activity she does so I was keen to choose slightly less common (but not unheard of) names for our other two girls.
Other names that were on my list are Olive, Violet, Camille, Sylvie, Erin and Nico.

  36. As I feel I am an honorary member of your family, I was just waiting for you to ask! I LOVE the name Sadie. It’s just perfect.

  37. With two little boys, I never got to use my favorite girl names:
Lucie, Emilia (nn Emi), Jane, Isla, Etta, Alice, Cleo, or Xanthe

  38. What about Scarlet? I also like Poppy….. Both in the red family like Ruby.
    Many blessings to your family.

  39. My daughter is Lily Marie – it’s becoming a more popular name, for sure. I love some of the suggestions above, especially Mabel, Francis (Frankie), Olive and June.
    Cute pic!

  40. Sisters are the best! Not sure how you feel about themes, but a color theme could be cool! Maybe Navy or Violet or Rose or Scarlet or Grey or Olive! Lots of options there.
I also love classic shorter names, like Nora/Cora, Sophie and Alice.

  41. Lily has always been such a sweet and beautiful name to me! Isabella also sounds lovely off the tip of your tongue haha – plus there are endless nickname combinations to suit anyone’s taste (e.g. Issy, Izzy, Is, Iz, Belle, Bella, Bels etcetera…)
    Emma x | Reverie Lane

  42. I love the name Lily, but I’m a huge fan of “old lady” names in general haha.
Currently liking Iris, Camille, Pearl, Eugenie/Eugenia (could call her Ginny), June, Maeve, Fern, Violet, and Clara.

  43. We just named our daughter Elsa (not cause of Frozen, but Casablanca’s Ilsa). I also have always loved my sister’s name, Teresa. Girls names are easier. I had a hard time choosing boys names for my 2 boys.

  44. I have four sisters and I love our all of our names Sarah, Stephanie, Jessica, Jordana (Jordy, such a cute nick name) and I like how uncommon my name is, Naomi. I am pregnant with my first along with two of my sisters (unplanned and all within 3 months!). I am having the first granddaughter and so exited! Thank you for doing your dress the bump YouTube videos! Love them!

  45. I just had my 3rd (and last) boy, so my girl names will never get a chance to be used. My too two faves are Iris and June. I think they complement Ruby well.

  46. My husband and I have loved Odille (Oh-dill-ee) and plan on naming any future daughter that. I’d be happy to share 😉 and yes… It ‘might’ be inspired by an Anthropologie brand. Haha I’m drawn to ‘different’ names likes Everdeen, Evangeline, Nouvel… Juniper, Finlee.

  47. I used my all-time favorite saving-it-since-I-was-8 name on my first, so when we were pregnant with our second girl, we were undecided for a long time. I brought the names books with me to the hospital just in case. I realized that the names I most gravitated to ended in the same vowel sound as my first’s name. I don’t like matchy-matchy names but the names themselves sound different enough.
Do you know if you like the long E ending enough to use it again, or do you want to stay away from similarly sounding names?
I thought Delia could be cute.

  48. What about a french name ?
Juliette, Louise, Léna, Alice, Camille, Romane,
Jade will be perfect, if you don’t mind matching your daughter’s name 🙂

  49. Such an exciting time…how lucky for Ruby to have a sister! How about Tatum or Harper? My daughter is Tatum and if we had another girl, her name would be Harper! Enjoy!!

  50. Such great names! Love the pic! Some that I have run across that I love are, Sage, Teagen, and Brooklyn. My all time fav is Stella though-my daughter 🙂

  51. we like eliza, audrey, junie, oona, lexie, jillie and maddi. maybe a thai or korean name to go with the wee one’s heritage. we are sure you’ll come up with something uniquely yours.

  52. I have a Ruby. Wasn’t interested in another gem themed name, or another name with the /e/ sound at the end. Our second daughter is Quinn Frances. Both perfect names!

  53. We have a Gloria (we call her Glo) and a Wren (full name is Catherine). I love Ruby – if we ever have a third girl, that’s on my list 🙂

  54. We have a Ruby too! She’s 3 and a half…when we found out out second was a girl we were totally stumped on what to name her. A week before she came we decided on Olive! We love the combo, Ruby and Olive!!!

  55. I have such a nice name association with the names Franny (Francis) and Birdie/Bird/Baby Bird (Roberta). Two of the nicest, smart (and funnest) girls I ever met! Good luck!

  56. So happy for you and your family! Sisters are the best! My little sister’s name is Risa (Ree-sa) I think Risa and Ruby sound adorable together. xox

  57. In my opinion Rose is a beautiful name and I am pretty sure that the little girl will blossom having Ruby as big sister 🙂

  58. Love seeing all the Lucy suggestions. My favourite name is Mackenzie… Kenzie and Ruby would be lovely girls names together xx

  59. Hi Sharon, I am 21 weeks too! Congratulations! I love Violet but worried it sounds too much like violence – am I being an idiot?

  60. If I ever get to have a girl (oh god, I sure hope so!) then I would like to name her Olive. I also like the names Marley, Alba, Scarlit, Rowan, Spade, and Maddox.

  61. My twins are Olivia & Caroline. We call them Liv & Nealy – nickname for her middle name, O’Neal. My sister is Caroline so we didn’t want to be confusing. You made my day suggesting those!

  62. So many lovely names! I would suggest a name with at least 2 syllables since your last name has only one. I like the idea of the gem and color names but it might be too “cute”. Coralie, Maisie, Leah, and Irene are some of my favorite names. Congrats! Darling picture, too!

  63. Is there an Asian name (Korean or Thai) that you love that is easy to pronounce and could be “pan-ethnic”? Our daughter has an Indian name — I could never give her a non-Indian name — but that is easy to pronounce and does not read “Indian” off the bat (if that’s important to you).

  64. I love Loren! I have two boys so I don’t think I will ever get to use it! Also love Lia.
Ruby is just the cutest little thing ever!

  65. I always knew that if I have I girl I would name her Ruby so I can see where you are coming from. We end up with Ruby Fahsai (means clear sky in Thai). However, I think Ivy is a cute name for a little sister.

  66. Hi Joy! I found you through your Target like and I’ve been reading your blogs and catching up with you on Instagram ever since! You have such a beautiful family.
Since Ruby is one of the gemstones, how about naming Girl #2 another gemstone/jewel?
To go along with Ruby, I really like the name Jade!
    Best of luck,
    Courtney
    @courtofhope

  67. I think Violet, Rose, Jade or Sophia would be cute.
Otherwise I would pick Charlotte or Lilia…

  68. My daughter is Margaux, which means Pearl. I thought about doing a gemstone theme as well because I really love Gemma which comes from gemstone.
Some other favorites: Francis (Frankie, Franny), Winnifred (Winnie), Simone, Cecelia, Stella, Sonnett…

  69. Some of my favorites are Lila (instead of Lily), Margot, Reese, Lena, Arya and Scarlett. Scarlett could be fun paired with Ruby. 🙂 Good luck!

  70. We lived far away from family growing up. So, I had an “adoptive” Grandmother. Her name was Ruby. And her sister’s name was Pearl. And they were the most wonderful ladies; I loved them as a child and looking back as an adult I’m even more endeared. She had the most beautiful garden cottage on a hill (both out-lived their spouses and lived together in old age). She had teeny tiny dishes that they would fill with snacks for me to graze unsupervised (pretty cool when you’re 4). And she always had fresh roses on the piano. So. PEARL. I vote you name Ruby’s sister Pearl 😉

  71. I like Mabel (Maebel or Mae too?), Eloise, Anya, Linden, Annabel, Mirielle (or Merielle), Esme, Josephine, or Celeste.
I’m 18 weeks along and we’re thinking Marin or Maris for girl names! People seem to like my name as well since it’s fairly unique!

  72. I totally hear you about using up the girls name-we had that issue too! My girls are Lucia or “Lucy” and Cassidy. Lots of people are voting for “matching” names and I just wanted to throw it in the ring that my girls names don’t really “go” and we’ve been happy with them.

  73. Congrats on the baby girl – we didn’t find out what we were having but it’s a good way to prepare!
These are my favourite girl names
    Stella
    Chloe
    Helena
    Estella
    Sienna
We went traditional and named both our boys after our fathers – Peter and Neo – made it so much easier to decide! Ha!
    Hugs
    Anastasia

  74. Here are a few I love:
    Hazel
    Elle
    Eleanor
    Marie
    Clara
    Grace
    Evie
    Madeleine
    Millie (Camille)
    Olivia
    Tess
    Lizzie
    Lulu
    Willow
They probably don’t fit your fancy but I like them!!

  75. Dorothy! My grandmother is named Dorothy and people call her “Dottie” which I always thought was cute and it’s old fashioned but not in a dowdy way. Dottie and Ruby sounds cute to me 🙂

  76. I have two girls, Penelope Sloan and Juniper Sadie. The one name I love but didn’t sound right with our last name is Clover. I just think it’s such a lovely name.

  77. I love classic names. Amelia, Elise (my daughter’s name) or Isabel 🙂 whatever name you pick, I’m sure it’ll be perfect 🙂
    -Lucy

  78. don’t know how they work internationally/in english… I like Anice, Violetta, Maja, Sophia

  79. Hi Joy! I am French and my partner is Welsh so we often have debate about what would be good names for our children in the future, we need something which would be suitable for both sides of the family. Here are a few of our baby girl favourite names: Louison, Josephine, Sienna, Mila and June.
I hope that might help! Thanks for sharing your life with us x

  80. How about Zoya? it’s my mum’s name and I love it…I also love Layla, Aria, Zahra and Dahlia.

  81. I don’t have babies yet, but I’m planning to name them after my parents and grannies (Margareth for a girl, Victor for a boy). Maybe you could too? That’s so nice, warm and memoriable!

  82. Stella! Lucy! Rose! Evie! Violet! Amelia! Ivy! Sophie!
    Ok, I’ll shut up now.
I wish you the best of luck with your pregnancy. 🙂

  83. My daughters name is Clementine, CC for short and well, obviously we LOVE the name. Its original without being TOO out there and its also got old soul. I think that Ruby & Clementine sound lovely together!

  84. My daughter’s name is Verity – it is from the Latin word veritas and means “Truth”.
    I also love:
    Ella
    Evelyn or Eve
    Maya
    Zoe
    Harlow
Scarlett – another name that means red!!

  85. My niece’s name is Gillian Raegn (Gil from her dad, Rae from her mom). I like the names Selena, Tamara, Bea, Clarisse and Kelia.

  86. The girl name I had picked when I had my twins (2 boys so I didn’t get a chance to use it) was Holland. I know it isn’t for everyone but if you like it, it’s all yours 😉

  87. Hello!
    Congratulations 🙂
I’m new to your.. well everything! I’ve seen an advertisement (maybe?) for Oh Joy! for Target and I’m pretty sure that’s when I fell in love. But Naomi (lovetaza) just mentioned you on her blog – I’m sure maybe a thousand people have said that to you already – but I’ve just discovered you today (after rereading her post for the third time because I always miss something the first time around).
Anyway, I love this blog already!
I happen to take kindly to the name Ruby because it was my nickname growing up. It has nothing to do with my actual name, but it’s what my family called me. I love it and it suits your cutie little girl.
I’ve always loved the name Jane. Charlotte is sweet to me still. Emma. Rosie. I love all of the older names that you don’t hear anymore.
I’m so glad I found this blog today. It’s so cheerful and bright and has made me incredibly happy! Thanks 🙂

  88. Tilly! That was my girl name for our second, but we ended up having a boy (Alec). Ruby and Tilly 🙂

  89. If we’re going with flowers, why not Poppy or Daisy? Both of these names are hip in the UK and I think if anyone can pull them off, it’s you guys.

  90. We have an Olivia Lynne and a Mila Juliette. Mila’s name was SO MUCH HARDER to come up with, but once we found it, it stuck permanently! My mothers side is Thai, so after hearing how they all try to pronounce Olivia or Ollie, we knew with the second we wanted something that would flow off the thai tongue a little easier =)

  91. here are my favorite names paired with ruby and your last name, cho:
    stella and ruby cho
    violet and ruby cho
    hazel and ruby cho
    ivy and ruby cho
    charis(pronounced karys) and ruby cho
    grace and ruby cho
    piper and ruby cho
    phoebe and ruby cho
    opal and ruby cho
    amber and ruby cho
    hope this helped!

  92. Hello, it’s nice how you can match the two sisters with a unique name, so when someone asks what there names are you would say Ruby and ________. It’s your choice so go ahead and choose the one you like, make it memorable too. Ruby & Pearl. Or maybe Ruby & Lily.
    Enjoy the name you choose.

  93. My little girl is Eloise which I absolutely love, but really wanted to call her Amelie (husband didn’t like it). Also on our list were: Emily, Zoey, Chloe. I also really love Willow and Elodie but husband didn’t agree.

  94. We had the hardest time picking out a girl’s name. We finally decided on Alice minutes before leaving the hospital and I absolutely love the name.

  95. I also love the name Riley, I think it’s a sweet name for baby girl.
Oh, and I am also suggesting Carmen, in case if you want to go with color

  96. Zoe
    Phoebe
    Lila
    Olivia
    Amelia
    Annabelle
Charlotte (Charlie or Coco for short)
    Madelyn
    Genna
    Gemma
    Elodie
    Georgina (Georgie for short)
Lastly, I’ve grown to love my name..Noa.

  97. You might have to throw all the names into a hat and just pick one, they’re all so good! On another note, I am a pilates teacher and I am always noticing people’s posture(s). You are so darn cute but I would love to see you roll your shoulders back a bit and stand a little taller. Said with lots of love and you are certainly welcome to tell me to buzz off… xoxo

  98. Ha! I know, youre so right! My good friend who owns a fitness studio always tells me when I see her. My posture got way worse after nursing too 😉
    Thanks for the reminder!
    Joy

  99. Love little girls! I just had a baby boy, but if he had arrived a she, his name would have been Isla Scott. I also have twins named Georgina (Georgie) and Ava.

  100. We went into the hospital with three names in mind if a girl popped out. We went with Tuula, but also loved Mirabel (Mira) and Ivy. Whatever you choose, I am sure that it will be something adorable and cheerful! Have fun playing with the endless options!

  101. Amelia Grace is my daughters name……after she was born I found out a family friend named their daughter the same thing! A common pairing, I guess 🙂

  102. Wow, I thought it was me being crazy! I also love that name, but was fearful it sounded a tad like ‘violent.’ Hmmm…

  103. The first name that comes to my mind is Lucy. I think it would be perfect name, somehow so “you”. 🙂
I got a baby boy 4 months ago, and didn’t get to use any of my favourite names.. Some from my list are: Clara, Greta, Ester, Amelia, Iris, Ida.. there are too many beautiful girl’s names!!

  104. Olive (assuming your last name is not Oil)
(I have a Ruby and Olive was the second runner up).
Congratulations—having two is just like having one-except on roller skates!
    Jenna

  115. Poppy is top of my list for a girl. I also love Adelaide but it’s my hometown so probably wouldn’t go there! Portia has been a favourite since I read Merchant of Venice in high school but I’d hate it to get confused with Porche 🙂

  116. My daugther’s name is Tessa. Other names I’ve come across (through my kids schools) that are great are Esme, Willa, and Inez. Good luck:)

  117. I love Amelia, Rosaline (Rose for short), Lucy, and Poppy
Also Lily, but it’s super popular! I know 3 babies named Lily.

  118. So many great names!! I totally just booked marked this page to come back to if we ever have another little girl. So many ideas to add to the list! Thanks ladies ;0)
I have a little 14 month old girl now. Her name is Hadley Claire. The other name that was in the running after we met her was Calia. They both seemed to suit her, and the husband preferred Hadley. So a Hadley we have!

  119. Or Rory, short for Roark. Roark is a boy’s name from Ayn Rand’s novel “the fountainhead”, but I think it could be great for a girl too. My parents’ neighbors have a little girl named Remmy, which is often short for Remington, which I like too.

  120. I have an Avienda (Avi), Olivia (Liv or Livi) and a Paige. If there were a need for more girl names I’d go with Fawn, Poppy, or Lily (my Abuelita’s name) or Gwyn.

  121. I love the name Joni! I named my daughter that and we have yet to meet another Joni 🙂
I also love the name Livia which I suggested to my brother for his baby girl.
    I also like Charlotte/Charlie and Penelope/Penny.
    Congrats! Little girls are awesome!

  122. I love the name Lily – it was on our shortlist. My little girl is called Olive Autumn but we sometimes shorten it to Liv.
I also like Dora, Maggie, Elsa, Agnes or Ava.
    Gorgeous pic!

  123. Iris Cho has a lovely ring to it.
ACupofJo Goddard once wrote that you should imagine whether you would go on a date/hang out with a person with that name if that’s all you knew about them.

  124. Such a beautiful and heartfelt post. I am affected by the details of baby naming. I had browsed online many sites to know name and meaning for my sweet baby. In all the sites I found http://www.babynology.com more helpful and interesting. By reading the articles, you will be learning a lot about baby-naming tips and can know various origin names.

  125. I haven’t been on blog land in a long time, and you have obviously had your babe! I love that you picked Coco! My vote if you ever have a third girl is Jane! Its a classic but rarely used for new babies. I’m expecting my THIRD girl and Jane with a quirky middle name is my vote…..we’ll see if I can convince my hubby! Btw, I am loving your target nursery line!!! I want everything!
