let’s get ready for the beach!

DIY Beach Marker

DIY Beach Marker

I’m so excited summer is finally here! I was never big into the beach growing up, but since moving to Southern California and having kids, the beach has become a favorite spot to spend fun times with my family. The best part is, you don’t need a ton of things because the water, the sand, and the open space provide the basis for a day full of building things from sand and playing in the ocean.

Beach Marker DIY

One thing that I always find is when coming back to our home base after playing in the water or wandering off to find sea shells, it can be tricky to find your spot especially on a busy weekend full of families. When Ruby is playing with her friends not too far away, I always want to make sure she knows exactly where we are. So, we created this Beach Marker with a few simple materials so that we all (kids and grown-ups, too) could easily find our way back whether it’s to take a nap, reapply sunscreen or take care of a boo-boo from a pretty, but sharp shell. Here's how to make this festive and fun Beach Marker…

You'll need:

styrofoam ball (we used a 10 in ball)

-1 inch gaffers tape (we used neon pink, neon yellow, and neon orange)

-a 1" x 48" round poplar dowel

-neon pink spray paint

-fabric (we used mint and gold faux leather)

– BAND-AID® Brand Adhesive Bandages featuring Oh Joy! and NEOSPORIN® Plus Pain Relief (for accidental nicks while crafting!)

Here’s how:

1. First paint your dowel the neon color of your choice.

2. Then start decorating the ball by taping the entire styrofoam ball with your base color (we used yellow) by wrapping it around and around until it’s covered.

3. Once it’s covered, use an x-acto to cut out a hole on one end that’s just a bit smaller than the dowel. You may have to cut through the tape a few times to carve out the hole. This is where you will be placing the end of the dowel.

4. Then, you the other tape colors to create a pattern of your choice. We made an overlapping striped pattern.

Then, to make the tassels:

5. Cut 1-inch strips of fabric to your desired length.

6. Fold the strips in half and use a wire to secure the tassels to the dowel. We covered the wire with an extra piece of fabric to create a band around the tassel and dowel to make it more decorative.

  1. Love the ball. So bright and colorful 🙂 The other day i went to target to look for the Oh Joy Band-aids but couldn’t find any 🙁 They either sold out or did not have any in stock!

  2. This couldn’t come at a more perfect time! Beach bound on Friday, and already prepared myself with your OH JOY Bandaid kit! But I love the new idea of a bright marker!

  3. Thanks Shruti!
They should be re-stocked if they were out of stock. They are in an end cap of the first aid section. You can also get them online if your store is out!

  4. I love Ruby’s adorable pants! I’d love to know where they are from. Also, any chance you’ll be doing another post for “If I had a boy” soon? Love your fashion picks!

  5. Great idea! I’m totally going to get your first aid kit for our home and also for our kids ministry at church! Such a cute idea!

  6. First things first – I need that beach chair! So cute and it looks pretty comfy too!
Second – how cute is Ruby? You can see how big she is getting. It’s so sweet watching her grow up on your blog.

  7. Where is Miss Ruby’s adorable ice cream tank (or swimsuit top?) from? Love this post!! Thanks!

  8. Love the beach marker. Such a good idea! And I recently received a Target shipment containing your Oh Joy bandages and first aid kit. Exciting! I’m looking forward to taking my 7-month-old to the beach and pool for the first time this summer!
