happy friday + thank you!

Oh Joy Studio

Oh Joy Studio

Happy Friday! I wanted to end this week and says thanks so much for those of you who took the time to answer my reader survey or leave a comment on that post from two weeks ago. It was nice to hear your constructive feedback and especially the things that echo'ed what I've been feeling or thinking you guys might say. While for the most part, you guys love the mix of content I've always done, I think I could tone down the kid/baby content a little, get a bit deeper into some of the more "personal experience" posts from my life (both the good and the bad), post a little less about LA-specific places, and get back into more home decor and design content that I used to do.

It was also really helpful to hear how you guys follow along with Oh Joy (mostly on Instagram and Pinterest), what Oh Joy products you have and love, and what you want more of (it's exciting to see that some of the products requested are in our plans to launch soon ;). Also, regarding products I wanted to mention that there were a ton of comments that you wish Oh Joy products were available to those outside the U.S. While I certainly would love that, most of that is beyond my control since we don't manufacture our own products and everything we currently design is sold through retailers based in the US. Hopefully someday, we can expand worldwide and get Oh Joy to all of you 😉

I know that I cannot please everyone and I cannot create a site that is everything to everyone. So I have taken all your comments to heart and we have already started to make some changes that feel right to us while also sticking to the heart of what Oh Joy is about—the mix of things in my life that I feel passionate about and want to share with you. Because the day that I get tired of sharing things or I no longer enjoy this little piece of the internet, is the day that I will stop blogging. But for now, I still have a lot more to share and I thank you (so much) for coming along on the journey.

P.S. We randomly picked five readers from the survey to win a special Oh Joy gift. All five people were emailed yesterday!

  1. Hi Joy, i wanted to say a big THANK You to you for feeding my creativity over the past few years through your blog and products. I am also very excited as i was picked for the special Oh Joy gift. Can’t wait to see what it is. Thank you again for asking for feedback and valuing our opinions. I am really looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us next year. Sounds like lots of good things are on the way. Have a happy weekend everyone 🙂

  2. Well this is super exciting! I didn’t have any of those same critiques but love the direction you’re heading (although I like where you are, too!!). Thanks for sharing with us – and please don’t get tired of it!!

  3. I didn’t take the survey, but definitely miss the design/interior content. I don’t mind the kid stuff, but I’m a mom. I can see how non-parents would want less. And I hope if you post less LA-focused stuff, you at least continue it on your instagram because you are how I find out about a lot of places!

  4. i’m a little sad if there will be less baby/kid content haha. but understand for your readers where it’s not applicable to their life at all. that being said, i’m really curious how coco’s sleeping worked out since she and ruby share a room. what happened when she was teething or extra needy? would there be times where she came back to your room? i’m at my wit’s end with my 9 month old and 3.5 year old. the younger isn’t sleeping through the night and i know some intense sleep training is needed…i want them to share a room so i can finally get a full night’s sleep. i feel like walking death 😛 so…all that to say, personal posts sound great! 😉
and…that’s all. have a great weekend!!

  5. I’m sorry I missed your survey but just wanted to let you know that I actually LOVE all of your kids and LA posts. I have read your blog for years but after moving from NYC to LA only just last year and having a baby girl this year I am enjoying your posts even more 🙂 But I’m sure you will strike the right balance whatever you decide. Thanks again for your wonderful posts.

  6. We LOVE your Ruby and Coco updates, so this post practically ruined our day!! They are so funny and precious! Perhaps the solution is to make a blog devoted exclusively to “kid/baby content” 😉

  16. Ha, thanks! Don’t worry, the baby/kid stuff isn’t going away. I think I am going to limit it to once a week 😉 Which feels like a good sprinkle in there without it getting too kid-focused.

  17. Hi Tracy,
Thank you! I will still have kid content but probably once a week but trying to keep it at that 😉 And I still love sharing personal posts on my Instagram and will continue to do so.
As for the sleeping, we did it after Coco was sleeping through the night before moving them in together. I wrote about it here:
    http://ohjoy.blogs.com/my_weblog/2015/06/sharing-a-room.html
Coco has only woken up a handful of nights since then when she’s been really sick and had a hard time breathing. If either kid is really sick and we sense it might affect their sleep, we’ll set up a pack-n-play for Coco or a mattress for Ruby in our office so that in case something happens in the middle of the night, we’re not fishing around in the dark to set something up. But that situation has only happened once for Ruby (when she had a stomach virus and was throwing up all night) and a couple times for Coco (when she was so sick she couldn’t breathe well and was so unhappy). We never bring the kids into our room as they just don’t sleep well there since they are not used to it.
You’ll be surprised how much they can sleep through though and if one is making sounds or crying, the other one doesn’t usually even hear it.
But yeah, you gotta get your little one sleeping through the night first 😉

  18. I love your site the way it is! But I’m looking forward to the changes too 🙂 Changes are exciting, especially when they are made with a clear purpose in mind! And all your beautiful and bright images brighten up my day everytime 🙂

  19. Sounds perfect, Joy. Have you done a shoe round-up for kids? My little one will be walking soon so its time to start thinking about that.
    Have a great weekend!

  20. I have to say, I am excited to see this! As someone who is childfree and loves home decor and design (as well as products for young adults), I have noticed myself visiting less and less. So, hooray! And thank you.

  21. I missed the survey, too. I love the kids content (I have two similar in age to yours and my youngest is a couple of weeks younger than Coco), but I get if not everyone loves it as much as I do. If I didn’t have kids, I’m sure I would feel differently.
I hope there are more paper plates, napkins, and other picnic supplies as well as bandaid designs coming in the future!

  22. I didn’t get a chance to fill out the survey, but I wanted to say my first reaction to this post was to think, “Oh! She should just keep posting about whatever she wants!” This is such a successful blog, and I think you’re going to have a strong readership no matter what, and it should really be about what motivates you and keeps you going. I have read your blog almost since the beginning, and you haven’t stopped being fun and interesting, even as the blog has changed over time. I don’t have kids or live in LA, but I enjoy the window you provide into those experiences.

  23. Thank Erin! That means so much! And don’t worry…things aren’t changing too much. It will be a lot of the same content, just different proportions of it and mostly focusing on adding back in some home decor as well 😉 I really appreciate your thoughts and comment and our loyalty for all these years 😉

  24. So glad to hear that Bob is doing better and recovering at home! How scary that must have been for everyone. Sending hugs your way! Love your content and hurray for more home decor and personal posts. Xo
