Instacart

Instacart

As a working mom of two, I feel like I have less and less time to get stuff done every day. I've talked before about using delivery services, apps, and other tools help make your life a little easier. Grocery delivery is one of those modern day conveniences that has made my life SO much easier. There are so many times when I don't have time to load up the kids and make a big trip to the grocery store…but I still need food to stock my fridge. I've used Instacart for over a year now and have been a regular customer because I can get my usual favorites from my local grocery stores (like Whole Foods or Gelson's), but it shows up at my door within 1-2 hours and allows me to do something I'd rather be doing in that time…like spend time with my kids!

Instacart is currently available in 18 U.S. cities. To celebrate its launch in Orange County, we've partnered with them to give away a $350 credit and a full year of Instacart Express (free deliveries!) to one lucky reader (a $500 value).

To enter, please visit (and like!) this Instacart post on Instagram! Then, leave a comment here telling me what you would do with the free time you'd save using Instacart. Entries close this Saturday, April 2nd at 8am PST and one winner will be chosen at random.*

UPDATE: Congrats to Melanie L. from Austin, TX for being our winner this time!

  1. Oh yeah, Instacart is one of my favorite services. It’s so convenient and ever since I’ve had my daughter it’s been a life savior. It saves so much time and effort. I would use that extra time with my newborn.it def. helps to have groceries delivered to your door and their shoppers do an excellent job at getting what you want. Thanks for this giveaway!!

  2. I would sit out in my sunroom, soak up the spring warmth with the record player in the background and knit with a moisturizing mask on! What a treat!

  3. I’d love a instacart credit. I’d get to spend more time with the kids. @jennettef

  4. i would probably use the time to play with my daughter and finally finish decorating her new big girl room! @shiru101

  5. I love this idea! I’d use the extra time working on my Brazilian portuguese to speak fluently with my sister in law and niece, who’s due in June!

  6. Oh my goodness I need this in my life. I am currently a doctor in training and my mom sent me this link. She knows I have very little time to get groceries so this would be an amazing service to try out. Thanks for the giveaway!

  7. Oh gosh, I’d use it to do anything BUT grocery shopping with a 3yo and a 6 week old! They are sweet wonderful girls but there’s not enough room in a cart for both of them plus a week of groceries, and in my Copious Spare Time (ha!) I’d prefer to…I don’t know, shower? 🙂

  8. i am terrible at grocery shopping! I end up going to a lot of stores and getting more or less than I wanted to. this would help save a lot of time and I could actually work on some of my art!

  9. I would use the time to keep chasing around my three babies under the age of two! We have a sweet, energetic toddler, we just had identical twin girls, and we are about to move into our first house…so Instacart would be a giant time/hassle/life-saver!

  10. I’m also a mom of two but as I’m not currently working outside my house I’d use the time to continue working on the book I’m writing!

  11. Instacart has saved me countless sore shoulders and blisters – I’m several blocks and 4 flights up from a supermarket! I am training for a charity half marathon and work has been CRAZY, I’d use the extra time to get some training in.

  12. Oh my goodness… we’ve got a 1 year old who is teething, and so much of her time is spent in sadness these days when we have time to play with her, and go figure, she’s always in a good mood right when I have to prepare meals… which really has me feeling down (especially since I *have* to work, and so I already miss so much of her day!)
I would spend my freed up time with the kiddo… making both of our lives better with fun and play.

  13. As a new mom, Instacart would make my life so much easier. I would spend my extra time loving on my new baby and getting things done around the house.

  14. I nanny full time for infant twins, so I also have very limited free time! I’d use that extra time to sleep in or finally get my OWN laundry done!

  15. I would love to try Instacart. I would use the extra time to read a book while snuggling up to the boyfriend.

  16. Woohoo! With the help of instacart, I’d use the extra free time to read and learn more about current events.

  17. We just moved to DC and got engaged so I would spend time exploring my new home, planning our wedding, and preparing for our married life together! <3

  18. I’d use the time to make some great, healthy meals and to relax and unplug from the constant “to do list” in my head!

  19. I would love to use that time for a good run or workout. Definitely time to look into Instacart, thanks!

  20. Since this would be more than one grocery store trip, I’ll say I’d partake in my two favorite things with my children: A hike in Rock Creek Park, and a giant art project spread across our dining room table. Fingers crossed!

  21. Whole foods is about 1.5miles away from our new apartment. We walk there (no car, no direct public transportation) so it usually takes us a a couple of hours. By the time we get back, we’re so tired from carrying all the groceries we can’t manage to do anything else. With the free time, I’d love to explore our new neighborhood!

  22. I love Instacart and should probably use it more. I would definitely use that extra time to work on one of my paintings 🙂

  23. I would use the extra time to spend with my significant other. We work opposite schedules and he typically works all weekend, where I have weekends off. I would also be excited about the cost savings! I tend to go a little too nuts in the snack isle and this would help!

  24. I would use the time to hang out with my 2 kids. We can go to griffith park or the zoo. They would love it.

  25. Perfect because I live in OC! If I won this, I would spend the time studying for the bar. A break on the grocery bill plus delivery would be so helpful.

  26. I’d spend my time enjoying my family. My husband goes grocery shopping on Sunday nights after the kids go to sleep. It would be such a treat to have that time together, just the two of us!

  27. Oh what wouldn’t I do?! I have a newborn so time is not something I have an abundance of these days! Thank you for the chance!

  28. Now that we’re heading into Spring here in the Midwest, I’d spend more time at the park with my toddler!

  29. I would spend more time cooking! And I would do a better job of keeping up with the dishes…

  30. I am pregnant with twins so I know that as soon as they come into this world I’m going to need as much spare time as I possible can get! This would be an amazing way to get some time back each week 🙂

  31. Grocery delivery would be such a time saver! I’d take my daughter to the playground.

  32. I’m both a mama and a clinical social worker who would love to use the time spent grocery shopping with my sweet baby!

  33. I live in L.A., which means grocery shopping usually always includes sitting in traffic (unless I wake up at 7am on a Saturday, woo!) I’d use the time saved with Instacart to cook a delicious meal, finish one of the many books on my beside table, and enjoy time at home with my love.

  34. I love Instacart! I’d use all my saved time to learn something, like a language or new-to-me skill.

  35. I’d use my extra time to do some movement, like a yoga class or a hike with my pup! Thank you so much for the giveaway.

  36. I host a weekly dinner for friends once a week, so I would be able to start cooking earlier and spend more time visiting with my guests!

  37. I’d use the free time this spring to plant a garden full of veggies and herbs to add a little extra freshness to my summer dinner parties.

  38. I would play baseball with my son and finally get to do the marbling art project I have been going on and on about!

  39. With my time saved I would plan better meals and stick to healthier foods rather than getting drawn into unhealthier snacks while in the grocery stores!

  40. I would enjoy cooking more and plan out my meals for the week while I wait for groceries!

  42. I’m horrible at keeping my kitchen stocked with food so having Instacart would probably mean less time eating out and more time cooking in.

  43. I just started using instacart a few weeks ago, inspired by you mentioning them! Quickly became a regular customer. Instead of going to the market, I can stay home and hang out in our backyard with our two daughters. Roasting marshmallows in the fire pit : )

  44. With my free time from not driving through crazy DC/Maryland streets, I would work out, catch up on my TV shows, cuddle with our kitties, and facetime my sister who’s in LA. Drivers here are horrible, and I’d much rather sit through LA traffic (where people have a sense of urgency), than drive anywhere here where everyone cruises 10 miles below the speed limit. Long story short, Instacart would make my husband’s and my life a million times easier!

  45. I would spend more time relaxing and catching up on my list of shows to watch on Netflix. <3

  46. I’m a freelance artist so I would invest the saved time in creating more pieces!

  47. I am a working mom with a 4 year old and a 5 month old, so grocery shopping is ROUGH right now. Having the extra time to hang out with the kiddos or maybe even sleep would be heaven!

  48. Also as a busy mom of two littles, I would clean our tiny abode from top to bottom, introduce the kiddos to donating their old clothes and toys, and spend the rest of the time hanging and talking about their artwork..their creativity just fills my heart and is always the best way to end my day.

  49. I’d use the time to go hiking with my kiddo. It’s spring in the PNW and I can’t wait to get outside!

  50. i’ve never used it but it sounds perfect since we have a 2 month old at home and i have only set foot in the supermarket once since she was born! would use the extra time for naps and soaking up every moment with my baby!

  51. Awesome, i totally have to try it. I would spend the time playing with my kids and hopefully having a little me time

  52. Just like you, would appreciate the extra time to play with my kids!! Such a great give away 🙂

  53. I would use the extra time to volunteer at the homeless shelter.
Thanks for the chance to win this!
    Joey J

  54. Love this giveaway and the fact that introduced me to Instacart..so brilliant! Not stopping at the grocery store on my way home from work would allow me to spend extra time w/ my lovely family almost everyday which, of course, is priceless!

  55. I have a 9-month-old daughter and I love making crafts for her to play with but never have enough time in the day to get around to the fun stuff! We need more time for play. I’d love to be the mom who says “yes” more!

  62. Love this!! Instacart is amazing..with all my extra time I’d finish the weaving I started last year and can’t seem to ever dedicate time to!

  64. I LOVE Instacart! I spend the extra time Insta saves me hanging out with my family.

  65. so excited they are coming to the OC! would love more time with my husband doing fun stuff e.g. yoga instead of errands.

  66. I know I’m not a working mom but I would love to have this service. I’m a 20-something in LA just starting out in my career and very much hustling to get ahead. I work in the theme park industry which is completely project based and its a small company so I’m often working long hours to prove myself (and hit the deadlines!) With LA traffic and my freelance gigs there’s not much time to cook let alone grocery shop. My boyfriend and I are really trying to eat healthier but can struggle to find time when we both are hustling. Also if i sent him to the store he’d come back with cheeze-its and rice-a-roni! Been looking at instacart recently and would love this opportunity to give it a try!

  67. I just moved out to my very first, real life, adult apartment (!)
And who knew? Being a real life adult is kind of crazy expensive 🙂

  68. I would spend the extra time with my boyfriend. We both have really busy work weeks so any time we can spend not doing chores on the weekend and instead spending quality time together is awesome!

  70. Instacart was a lifesaver in the first few months with my daughter! But now that she’s a toddler, it’s just so hard to run errands with her so might have to start depending on Instacart again!

  71. I love to throw on “Gilmore Girls” or “The West Wing” and do chores while waiting for Instacart! I get to feel doubly productive and also relaxed.

  72. I’ve put off trying Instacart for some unknown reason. In a perfect world I would spend the time playing with my boys but in reality I might just be cleaning the kitchen to get it somewhat organized before a load of groceries arrive. 🙂

  73. I’d love to spend the time saved by using Instacart with my husband, cooking a wonderful meal together!

  74. Seriously, on-demand services like Instacart are CHANGING LIVES! If I could skip the grocery store more often because of Instacart, I’d spend my Sundays (currently grocery day) doing those passion projects I never seem to prioritize. Making Sundays “me” days sounds like a dream!

  76. Is it too sad if I said sleep? Seems like i’m always behind these days. I liked and commented under “imnessp”.

  77. I would call my grandmother! She’s a chatter and looks forward to my calls every week, but I usually can’t call for as long as I’d like on account of errands. Then I feel guilty when I have to go. If someone picked up my groceries (I don’t even get that much) I could spend a little more time visiting. 🙂

  92. I would take my 6 month old out to the park instead of running errands(grocery shopping) in the car!

  96. I would spend my extra time enjoying evening walks with my husband instead of fighting my say through after work grocery store craziness! 🙂

  97. I desperately need to organize my photos and make photo books, so I’d commit the extra time for that purpose!

  98. Commuting over an hour to work each way plus long hours in the office doesn’t leave me much time to grocery shop. Instacart would be a life saver!
    @valieee

  106. Oh man I’d be able to spend so much more time with my little one (who I cannot take with me on our weekly shopping trips as she has some intense stranger anxiety)!

  107. In my extra time I would clean the house and do some laundry – both things that have gone to the wayside.

  108. I LOVE Instacart! I spend my extra time on adventures with my son. Time is flying by way too fast with a little one.

  109. I love instacart. Every time I visit my sister in Chicago I have instacart deliver groceries right before I arrive. It allows us to visit together and cook together instead of grocery shopping. When you have family across the U.S. You appreciate and want to maximize every minute together!

  128. I am pregnant with my second baby girl and have been interested in trying Instacart when she arrives in a few weeks. My first baby is 16 months so with my free time (hahahaha) … Kidding. 145. Yay! Have always wanted to try it. I’d spend it cleaning…which always seems to fall to the wayside. 😛

  146. We just had a baby, so we would use Instacart for all the meals and groceries I can’t buy because I’m not able to leave the house! Also, trying to learn all new recipes for my culture would be easier knowing if I forgot an ingredient, instacart is to the rescue!

  157. I love Instacart! I would use that extra time to help me finish up my thesis project to graduate from college with a degree in graphic design 🙂

  158. I would love to try instacart so I can have a moment to myself. Having a career in a big city and being a wife leaves me not a whole lot of extra time. Maybe I’d take a bubble bath!

  159. I would use the time to go to the gym, spend time with my family, and spend time studying for tests required for my professional licensure.

  160. What a great giveaway! I would spend the extra time catching up on House of Cards with my husband, we haven’t started the new season yet! And maybe spend some extra time on meal prep for the week, so that I’m not quite so rushed when I get home from work.

  161. I <3 instacart! I think it's such a time saver! With my new-found time, I would be able to garden, read, spend more QT time with my man... go running, make art... The list continues! Thank you for a great giveaway!

  162. I would use all the extra time actually cooking 😛 I’d love to try Instacart!

  163. I would spend extra time outside with my family! Bike rides to the park, hanging out with our neighbors, chasing butterflies – it sounds lovely! 🙂

  164. I would spend my extra time making Skype calls to all my friends around the world who I never get enough time to speak to! Instacart looks amazing 🙂

  165. I’d spend time writing! Blogging about my design work and newfound interest in a capsule wardrobe

  166. I have an hour long commute. I dread having to stop for necessities like milk for morning’s breakfast when I’d rather get to my kiddos sooner. Instacart is like the fairy godmother!

  167. We just purchased a home 7 months ago. We’re slowly working on the spaces to make it ours, and some extra free time would help us get there a little faster!

  168. I especially love Instacart because I can order things specifically for a recipe I want to try — I always forget or get the same stuff when I rush in on my way home from work or something. I would use the extra time to catch up on thank you notes and connect with friends far away on the phone.

  169. This would be a dream – my partner and I just opened a business and haven’t figured out how to have fresh fruits and veggies in the house because there just aren’t enough hours in the day!

  170. I’d use all the extra time outside with my girls to teach my five year old how to ride a bike and my two year old to scoot.

  171. clean the house, more activities with the kids, more time at the zoo/park… so many things!

  172. I first learned of Instacart from your Seattle post, and quickly fell in love with it—thanks Joy! I would use the extra time to pause, sit down and write a card to a best friend.

  173. I adore Instacart. The extra time I would gain would be spent doing the other chores I tend to put off and hopefully hitting the gym. 🙂

  174. Spend more time with the baby and doggy!! With my commute, i don’t get home until 6:15. Baby goes to bed at 7:30. An hour and 15 without worrying about groceries would be awesome!

  175. I am a homeschooling mom, so I would use the time I would spend dragging my kids around the store to do something fun with them instead. And less stressful for me!

  176. This would be awesome! I would use the extra time to get some stuff done around the house…much better than grocery shopping 🙂 Thanks for the chance to win!

  177. Instacart is my favorite when I don’t get a chance to make it to the grocery store or need a few items for dinner. It saves me so much time and the convenience of being able to get fresh groceries even if the three year old is mid tantrum. I’m also able to spend all that extra time either cleaning up after my little one or taking a taking a few minutes to organize the rest of my day.

  178. Have yet to try Instacart, but I’m now psyched to do it. I just had my first baby and can barely take a shower let alone shop for groceries. So I would spend my extra time taking care of me so I can better take care of the little one.

  179. I would love to try Instacart! I have heard so many good things about their service. I have a baby and a child in Kindergarten so I would love the extra time to exercise, read, or make a meal using a recipe 🙂

  180. with the free time, I would probably relax a little bit, hang out with my daughters a little longer at the park… oh, the possibilities! 🙂

  181. I would use my extra time from by busy schedule to make it to the gym!! What a generous giveaway! (:

  182. I would love to win this instacart giveaway. As a full time working mom in a career, it’s difficult to juggle it all. I use my lunch break at work to shop for groceries and don’t have any time in my day to work out and get in shape. Since I have had a kid, I’ve gained a lot of weight because I don’t have enough time to excercise. There’s simply not enough time in the day to make time for my own health and well being. Using instacart will save me time that I can be using to get back into shape and most importantly improve my health.

  183. I’m moving to NYC and am quite eager to get to know the city so in my spare time, I would explore!

  184. Instacart looks great! I’d use some extra time to spend a little extra time at the gym or going for a jog. I love to read a magazine in the sauna as a treat! Thanks for the chance, Joy.

  185. I recently started adapting a healthier lifestyle by eating better and working out as much as possible. Problem is, I also work long hours and manage my own blog on the side (rachelinflight.com). This doesn’t leave me with much time to run off to the gym for classes nor do I get to have ‘girls nights’ as much.
Winning this would definitely free up some time that I usually spend meal prepping or cooking dinner for my boyfriend and I. I also think it would allow me to host a girls night in and use my meals from Instacart to treat the girls to a nice dinner.

  186. I love instacart! The time it saves allows me to cook a meal for my kids or get in an extra hour of work.

  187. Since I work full time and am in school full time, I would use all the free time to study!… and do laundry.

  188. I started using Instacart when I was recovering from major surgery and couldn’t drive or lift things. I’ve continued with it because I don’t have to give up study time to go to the grocery store! I have more time to cook healthy meals. I’ve always meal planned and made detailed grocery lists so it’s a perfect service for me. I recommend it to everyone.

  189. I would spend my time finishing my homework in between my commuting between the city and campus for my college courses and division 1 soccer practices

  190. Instacart is great! Instead of grocery shopping, I’d love to use my time on Saturday mornings to get a meal for the week knocked out and take my two daughters on a mini “adventure” to the zoo or park.

  191. Would love to win this and use the time to play more with my daughter! As a working mom its hard to balance that time and prepare a nice home cooked meal. 🙂

  192. I have a 7-week-old newborn and a 3-year-old toddler so using Instacart would help me save so much time. Instead of being stressed out driving with my crying newborn to the grocery store and rushing before I have to nurse her again, Instacart would allow me to choose exactly what I need to cook for my family at the comfort of my home.

  193. I’d probably do more proper meal prep if I saved time by not grocery shopping myself!

  194. I Am working and preparing for a baby. So time (and energy) is always limited. I would use the time to start my nursery!

  195. Instacart is such a great service – Thanks for hosting the giveaway! If I won, I would use my extra time to actually meal plan so my groceries weren’t just a random mess of things that looked good when I walked through the grocery store. I love to feed my family well, and this would be a huge help!

  196. Ideally, I would use the time to catch up on someone writing and design projects in been neglecting. But, taking the time to watch a good movie at home is also something I would like to do more often.
