Three Ways to Use a Serving Tray

A serving tray is one of those staple entertaining pieces to have around the house. You might buy one for having breakfast in bed or for carrying drinks when entertaining for the holidays. But what do you do with said tray when you're not lounging around having breakfast in bed (how many people really do that anyway?) or when you're not entertaining?

A tray is basically a vessel used to transport and hold lots of things at one time. And it doesn't have to always be food or drinks like you'd imagine. Here are a few ways we like using a serving tray within everyday life…

Three Ways to Use a Serving Tray

1. Art Tray – For art or craft supplies, help keep them organized with a serving tray. It also allows for easy transport if you're taking supplies from one area of the house to another (great for kids, too).

2. Coffee Table Tray – If you like having books on your coffee table, use the tray as a base for the books and other loose decorative items. That way, you can have a single unit to pick up and move if you need to quickly clear the table for drinks and snacks.

3. Plant Tray – Keep your house plants clustered together on a tray to create a focal point in any room of the house. Plus, if you need to quickly water them in the sink or outside, you can take them all in one go for their thirst quencher.

We used our Oh Joy for Target lucite tray here, but you can apply these tips to any serving tray with handles!

  1. Your ideas to use a serving tray are good and inspiring! As far as I remember we have in our household only trays made from wood and we use in only for transporting food 🙂 I see I really I should add some trays like you show here 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration.

  2. I stayed at a new friend’s one evening, and while we were getting ready to go out, she loaded some wine, glasses, and hummus onto a wooden tray to take to her bedroom from the kitchen. I’d never seen someone do that before, and thought it was just the classiest means of transport! Why can’t we use trays in our everyday life??

  3. For my son’s (now 15) 5th grade class I had the kids make mini picasso’s, which I then decoupaged onto a…tray. I love trays and feel they are beyond useful. But can you believe a mom said they’re useless. She asked why I didn’t frame them instead and that the teacher will probably just get rid of it. To this day I can’t believe how rude she was. I was kind and considerate back…no point in engaging in rude behavior. Love your blog and your girls are just too cute. Hang in there…life with kids gets easier. :)Danielle

  4. Great post! So many cute ways to use your serving trays!!
On a side note, I love the tapered canister with the neon band in option 2, is it available online somewhere?!
    Thanks for another beautiful post!

  5. As a teacher, I can guarantee she probably still has that tray to this day. I would love it if one of my parents did that!
