an oh joy room in the modernism house!

Oh Joy Room for Modernism House

Oh Joy Room for Modernism House

Each year for Modernism Week in Palm Springs, The Christopher Kennedy Compound re-imagines a classic Palm Springs property, using the best of modern of technology and bringing together about 20 of the country's most prominent design talents for a house that gets completely decked out called the Modernism House. This year, I was one of the designers to design a guest bedroom for the home owner, Kelly of Kelly Go Lightly! Here's a look back at our plan, the before photos, and the finished room…

Just a few weeks ago, the room looked like this! The house was purchased by the homeowners in the fall and it was being renovated very closely up until the debut of the house. That's Klaus (aka "Fred Baby"), the homeowner, who was amazing throughout this whole process. I'm so happy we could be part of creating an amazing home for Klaus and his wife, Kelly.

Here's a look back at the design plan and rendering. For the most part, we stuck to the original plan. But a few changes were made along the way as some items arrived broken and last minute swaps had to be made. I don't design rooms at this hyper speed regularly, so it definitely felt like an episode on some HGTV show where everyone has to design a room super fast and the house goes from renovation mode to perfection in just weeks!

By the time we came back early last week to get the room set up and styled, the floors had been put in, the light fixtures installed, and the walls freshly painted. We spent a day setting up the room early last week and then I went back at the end of the week to put finishing touches on the room before doors opened last Friday evening. Here's a look at the final room…

Designing this room gave us an opportunity to show off a bunch of our current products within the context of a real life home and style them all together. We also debuted a couple pieces from our new furniture line (like that daybed!) that launches on March 1st. Woo! We added DIY elements in the space like these pom pom curtains and gold dots.

Items shown: Custom wallpaper printed by SpoonflowerTarget dresser, vintage suitcases, Oh Joy! for Target cloud platter, and Trina Turk clothing.

There was a large closet in the room which felt like a place to set up a mini wardrobe area for guests to keep their belongings while visiting. We created this custom wallpaper that tied back to the daybed using the adhesive wallpaper from Spoonflower. It was the perfect way to create exactly what we needed for a small, but impactful, space.

It was an incredible honor to be part of this process and meet a bunch of other talented designers who all contributed to creating a room in the house. The amazing thing is that 95% of the pieces in this room are from Target, and everyone who came through on the tours were so surprised to hear how affordable everything was. Huge thanks to my amazing team (Courtney, Angie, Julia and Jess), the whole Christopher Kennedy team, and Target for helping to bring this room to life!

P.S. If anyone is looking to visit the home in Palm Springs, it's still on display through Sunday with an epic party on Saturday night! See more details right here.

  1. SO FUN.
I’m heading out to buy your OMG vase and iridescent ottomans from Target today, so perfect timing.
What is the fabric on that bench? It’s incredible.

  2. What a spectacular space 🙂 ….May I inquire about the rug? (I didn’t see it listed in the items.) It is a lovely plush, neutral and comfy base for your delectably colorful pieces!! 🙂

  3. Congrats on being one of the contributors to the house. I am just loving that couch! I wish I had my own place so I could buy it! You did a great job decorating and designing the room! The styling in perfect. What a fun process to watch. It’s been so cool and awesome to see your blog and brand grow over the years! -Katie
