Artist Spotlight: Kooij

Dirk van der Kooij’s work rethinks the function and sustainability of plastic, and the results are incredible…

In 2009, Dirk van der Kooij founded Kooij in the basement of the Design Academy in Eindhoven. His focus was to determine if plastic could be an honest, durable material. Six pizza ovens welded together proved that yes, it could. And his work has had incredible results…

One of his series of work that I’m obsessed with is called the Meltingpot table. Discarded recycled plastic prototypes, production faults, and color tests mix together to create these Meltingpot pieces.

These tables are all custom and take 3-4 weeks to be made, and they are simply exquisite.
