{taste it}: pupusa…

Delmys-pupusa

Delmys-pupusa

Originating from El Salvador, a pupusa is a thick, hand-made corn tortilla {made with rice flour or corn flour} that is filled with cheese, meat, and/or beans. One of my favorites in Los Angeles is Delmys Pupuseria located at the Silver Lake Farmer's Market on Saturdays or the Hollywood Farmer's Market on Sundays. Topped with pickled vegetables, hot sauce, and sour cream, it's rich, savory, chewy, tangy, and spicy…a perfect {and hearty} weekend snack!

  1. yummmmmm!! i love pupusas! there is a great little salvadorian place right down the street from my office and it has the best pupusas…now i think i’ll have to have that for lunch 🙂

  2. My co-workers and I used to frequent a “pupuseria” near our office every Thursday. We deemed it “Pupusa Thursday”. It became such a part of our lives that I had a t-shirt airbrushed to say “Pupusa Thursday” with an airbrushed pupusa on it. The dude had no idea what I was talking about, so I told him to just airbrush a cross between a pancake and a tortilla. I wore the shirt every Thursday. That was a true story.

  3. Kelly,
That is AWESOME! I once did a pizza tour in NY with a bunch of family before I left the East Coast and we made shirts too. Totally dorky but very appropriate for us ;P

  4. Looks amazing. I watched them making pupusas on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives this weekend and literally thought, “I wonder where I can get them in LA?” So thank you! Also, were you able to get that fabric you tweeted about?

  5. Love, love, LOVE!!! My husband is from El Salvador and promptly introduced me to the goodness of pupusas. I can’t eat dairy, so we made our own corn pupusas filled with refried black beans and carnitas. Not quite the same without the cheese, but still…YUM! The rice and pumpkin versions are tasty as well.

  6. I was so happy to see you do a post on pupusas! I was born in LA but my parents were born in El Salvador so I grew up eating these 😀 There are so many different and delicious varieties of pupusas so I hope more people get a chance to try them!

  7. Oh I do love pupusas and I’m glad you mention that they are often made from rice flour; I NEVER see rice ones offered in the states (and I can’t eat corn). We spent ~5 months in El Salvador and found rice pupusas offered just as often as corn. I posted a lengthy blog post about them here with a recipe: (http://sv-timemachine.net/2006/11/lets-cooking-pupusas/ upon re-reading it, I’d add a pinch or so of salt to the pupusa dough).

I went to El Salvador with my fiance in September, when I could hardly point to the country on a map, and absolutely loved it. We stayed with old friends of his and an old lady made us pupusas and tacos. Thanks for bringing back the memories!
