Gigis-cuban-potato-ball

…a savory treat for a change…a Cuban potato ball from Gigi's Bakery in Westlake. On the outside, they look like any average fried snack, but once cut into, you see that these tiny fried rounds are full of mashed potato and seasoned ground meat. It's like a shepherd's pie with Latin spices in a tiny bite-sized package…and oh so comforting… — Joy

  1. Yummy, yummy Joy. Your snacks always make me so hungry and these carbs have a way of ruining my curves. Loved your roast pork bun the other day as that’s a staple of mine every week, and we finally found a great bakery here that makes really stuffed lean pork buns. Thanks for sharing and inspiring us all! Have a good one.

  2. I believe these are also called Papas Rellenas a South American dish that started in Peru. The Daring Cooks had to make some for last month’s challenge. Very delish 🙂

  3. looks yum. Have you been to Joan’s on Third yet? I went for the first time last weekend and can’t wait to go back! It feels so New Yorky to me

  4. Joy, all your foodie posts look delicious, and I have a question for you and possibly your hubby too :)! My husband and some friends are heading out to LA this weekend for a bachelor party. Do you have any suggestions for fun places for them to go? Food, fun, or random – anything to help guide them a little better would be much appreciated – were from Phoenix so we just do not know :)!

  5. Hey Joy,
I know you live on the Westside, so have you tried the potato balls at Porto’s in Glendale? Heaven! In fact, I don’t think there is anything there that isn’t great!

  6. Hi Nicola,
I actually live on the East side so Glendale is pretty close! Planning to try Portos soon!
    Thanks for the suggestion 😉

  7. Gotta ditto the Porto’s love. I moved away from Atwater Village a few years ago and still find myself fantasizing about the Glendale location. Cheese rolls, potato balls, ham&cheese croissants, tropical fruit pastries galore! Get thee to Porto’s!

  16. When I saw this, I was going to suggest going to Porto’s too! The potato balls are pretty popular there.. as are the cheese rolls.. and guava rolls.. and guava cheese rolls! Can you tell Porto’s is my go to place when I visit SoCal? 🙂

  17. hah! i live right near gigi’s and go every so often.
everything i’ve had there has been delicious. the first time i went, they accidentally charged me twice (on an amex giftcard, fortunately) but i didn’t notice until later and i lost the card so i could never bring it up to them. the second time i went, i was in line with my bf and suggested we pay in cash to avoid that happening. unbeknownst to us, the owner was sitting nearby at a table. he must’ve heard me because he treated us like royalty, and even gave us free pastries to eat while we waited for our lunch! now, i love going there, even if it doesn’t always mean free pastries.
