One of my favorite LA artisanal ice cream shops, Carmela in Pasadena, just started offering classes…and I was thrilled to attend one this past weekend. My friend Caroline and I spent Saturday morning learning about herbal infusions from owners Jessica and Zach. Because all of their flavors use only pure and organic ingredients, we learned how to infuse the ingredients of choice into ice cream and sorbet. We made Vanilla Bean Lemon Verbena ice cream and Lemon Basil Sorbet…yum! It was a morning of learning and sampling…and what's better than ice cream and cookies for breakfast? Carmela has another class later this month and are planning a savory-themed class next! — Joy

Nom! Have you seen the new book by Jeni of Jeni’s Ice Creams? It’s the best ice cream in the world, she’s located in Columbus. The book is called ‘Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home’
Yum! I love their ice cream, it’s totally worth indulging in. Such a cool idea that they do an ice cream class, I’d love to try it out.
Sounds absolutely yummy! I’d love to try a class like that out some time. Who doesn’t like sampling ice-cream and learning about infusions?! Haha! <3
i am an ice cream addict (can easily have it for breakfast) and would love to attend of these classes! the flavor combos sound amazing. as do those waffles cones. were you taught to make those too?
Yummy !!!! Another reason to add to my “I wish I lived in California” list !
This looks like so much fun. I typically don’t discriminate against ice cream, but lets face it that homemade is the best.
Carmela’s ice cream is simply the BEST! Their little space in Pasadena is adorable too. Wish I still lived in LA to take advantage of their new classes – how fun!
Sweet sweet sweet!!! delicious
I’m definitely going to sign up for their class! (: Thanks!

I love making homemade ice cream but never thought about taking a class! How fun…and it’s located in my hometown so even better. 🙂
Looks amazing and the waffle cones look delicious, yumm.
That is a class I would love to have been part of! Sounds and looks delicious!

This looks like so much fun. I’d love to take one of those classes!
I love your blog and the food you feature, but I do feel like it’s missing recipes! It’s hard to read about all this beautiful food and not know how to make it.
What about sharing some ice cream recipes?
I love Carmela! It’s pretty dangerous that I only live a few miles away 😉
WOW This looks so fun!!! and you can eat them afterwards! I wish I could join!
Lemon + basil … seriously?! That is like all good things in the world coming together in a sorbet.
Hi Sarah,
Thanks for your note! Recipes were given to those to paid for and attended the class, so I dont think it would be fair to share their recipes due to that fact. When I make something and post about it, I do share recipes when I can!
best,
Joy
Making ice cream is so much fun and once you’ve got the hang of it you can invent any flavor you like. I made dark chocolate and crystalised chilli recently, it was amazing!
