We’ve been in Philly for the past week visiting our families. And brrrr…it’s cold! I spent 30 years living on the East Coast, and now I can barely take the chilly weather. So sad. Ruby, on the other hand, loves it. She smiles and laughs when a gust of brisk air hits her in the face!
We visited some of our favorite spots to eat including Han Dynasty (the best Chinese food), Franklin Fountain, Tacconelli’s Pizzeria, and Spread Bagelry.
But, of course, the best times have been spent enjoying simple moments with family. Ruby’s grandparents (that’s my Dad above) have been pretty over the moon this week.
Wishing you all an enjoyable weekend full of your favorite foods and your favorite people…

Miss my city!! Beautiful shots, hope you enjoyed your time in your old haunts!
Need to get to some of those restaurants, thanks for the reminder! Ruby looks super cute and cozy in her neon Bee…we have the Donkey and don’t know what we would do without it. 😉
Oh my lanta, the way your Dad looks at little Ruby makes my heart melt! Hope you guys get warm soon, your layers are cute though!
Ruby is so adorable!! i can just eat her up!! i loved your instagram pic of Ruby kissing your dad!! its so cute! Hope you enjoy the rest of you time at your home away from home. 🙂
Ruby is so beautiful, very cute outfit. On another subject, that bagel looks yummy, must buy some though they won’t be as good as the ones you can get over in the US. Have a lovely weekend 🙂
Aww I moved out of Philly over the summer! Although the city can be frustrating at times (lack of public transportation, the PPA…etc) I do miss its unique neighborhoods and wonderful (and affordable!) restaurants! Hope you all had fun!
Hi Jo,
Aw I am so happy to read your suggestions in Philly. I will be visiting in April and remembered some days ago you lived there. I went through an old guide you crated for Design Sponge back in ’08 but it’s not longer active. I did find some old posts of yours though.
My only question, I LOVE Thai food, would you please recommend me your fav spots?
Thank you!!
Welcome to Philly! I am bursting with hometown pride you’re visiting.
Oh. My. Gosh. That first picture is so sweet. Ruby is so beautiful!

The pictures of Ruby with her grandfather are so sweet. It’s so hard living away from your parents when you have a baby. We’re going back to cali to see my parents next month and I can’t wait for my baby to see her grandparents! This is just making me want to go today! I hate waiting. ugh.

hope you made it to the terminal (reading terminal) and maybe even the goat statue informal “kids area” in rittenhouse square. lucky you that ruby doesn’t mind the cold. beautiful shots of ruby and the family.
What cute clothes on Ruby! I moved out West 3 years ago, and I used to miss the seasons and cold and still do around Christmas, but now I think I would be such a wimp back in the Northeast (and I came from Canada, too!).

I didn’t know you had family in Philly. I am sitting here now looking out my office window at the Barnes Museum!
I’ve lived in Philadelphia for 7 1/2 years now, and I’m from San Francisco!
So welcome back, and glad to hear Ruby likes the brrrrrrr.
I am the same way! I grew up in the Chicagoland area and I have only been in LA for a year, but I cannot STAND the cold now! I don’t know how I did it before.
The photos of you and Ruby making paper plate faces made me smile 🙂
I love absolutely everything Ruby wears.
love love love her pants – where are they from?
I LOVE the look on Ruby’s face in that first shot. What a cutie, I hope she gets to make some snow angels while you’re still in town!
this is absolutely darling. ruby is such a cutie pie. enjoy your weekend!

philly love in the air!! i’m “from Philly” and haven’t been to any of the restaurants you mentioned! hope you come back soon 🙂
Ruby’s little face framed in the paper plate is absolutely perfect and precious!
I absolutely enjoy the way your family interacts together.. And how much joy your little one has brought to your lives 🙂
Lovely photos.
Time with grandparents is so important. We were moved out by the time I was born, but when my first few siblings were born Mum and Dad actually lived in the same house with Mum’s parents.
hello! you should share that asian recipe with all the chilies! my boyfriend and i love spicy asian chicken dishes and if your family made that- please share! if you got it from a restaurant, let us know!
ps. love your blog!
ah! it’s probably from Han Dynasty- skipped right over that part!
I love the picture that you share. Ruby is adorable. And I just want to send Internet hugs and happiness to your family. Keep on keeping on.
Ruby is gorgeous! You also dress her in the cutest clothes! I love seeing happy photos of your family. The plate ‘game’ looks like so much fun as well!
That food all looks so amazing, now I’m hungry. Have a great time in Philly!
Ah Philly! Isn’t she lovely?
We lived in Philly for years and are now out in the burbs in West Chester. How about Franklin fountain? So much fun there! I would love to meet you next time you’re in town. Invite you over and meet the family and maybe work on a project together. Your style is inspiring!
Looks like fun was had by all!

Beautiful photos. Ruby is so adorable! I’ve lived on the east coast my whole life (Maine), and my sister lives in Philly now. I’ve never been there before, though I’ve been meaning to visit!
Did you grow up in Philly?
No way!! How cute is she!!
such gorgeous photos! Ruby is becoming such a cute little lady 🙂
Tell Ruby anytime she’d like to take some of this cold back to Cali she’s more than welcome to do so LOL.
She’s so precious everytime you’d post a photo of her on instagram I’d show my daughter and she’ll roll her eyes up in her head (she’s 16) now she’s like oh there’s Ruby let me see the pic:)
I knew she’d catch on to the cuteness:):)
Lily did you say lack of public trans? In Philly? I hate SEPTA but they’re everywhere unfortunately unless we’re talking the time they begin/end service which I think it’s crazy that at least the trains don’t run all night.
Haha She looks so happy in the first pic with her huge mitts!
When we moved from NYC to SF, we complained about all the things that we missed. But it was amazing how quickly we got used to everything West Coast. We went soft so fast!! Now I can’t imagine how I survived all those East Coast winters.
Hope you enjoyed your visit!
Amazing!
