happy friday + do something that challenges you…

Oh-joy-talking-camera

Last year, when I started making videos for this blog, I told myself I'd only do them if I didn't have to talk. I was so scared of talking in front of the camera because it's just not an easy thing to do. But then I realized I was taking the easy way out, and you never really grow by taking shortcuts, right? So you know what I did…I am challenging myself to make a year full of videos in which I'm going to do exactly what I avoided—talk to the camera. So, I ask you, friends…what are you scared of? And will you face one of those fears by giving yourself a personal challenge? C'mon, let's do it together…

P.S. Thanks so much for sharing last week. I loved hearing about what changed you

  1. Glad you’re overcoming your fear of talking in front of the camera! I’d have to say my current fear is the future, and I worry about it so much that I don’t live in the present- so that’s the fear I’m trying to currently overcome. It’s a work in progress as life is, but I know I’ll get there 🙂

  2. Love the idea of facing your fears… I wrote about something similar on my blog today too – must be in the air 😉
I love the videos you produce so far, can’t wait to see what else you come up with =)

  12. Love when you are writing about really personal stuff. I’m a photographer but I feel so akward being in front of the camera. So I started a self-portrait project with another photographer. It’s only once a month, but there are not excuses to not get in front of the camera. And guess what… I’m loving it!

  13. I am trying to be more open about my writing – no one’s going to buy it if no one can read it! Thanks for the inspiration, as always.

  14. Thanks for sharing, Joy! It’s interesting to learn about other people’s challenges and how they’re dealing with them. As for me, making my writing public has been a challenge. I’ve been wanting to start a blog, and tried a couple of times without much success, but the thought of sharing my writing in public gives me a bit of anxiety. I’m slowly coming around and getting more comfortable with writing/blogging though as I take baby steps to overcome my fear. Hitting “publish” is not as nerve-racking as I though it would be!

  15. Good for you, I hate talking in front of the camera too. But I agree 100%, challenging ourselves is what makes us better and more creative, the reward is always greater than the challenge. I’m terrified of heights and speed which is why I don’t ski {and I’m from Utah}, so this winter I’m going to give it a try!

  16. Oh my goodness! I am the same….I didn’t realize how scared I really was of talking on camera until I had to do it a few weeks ago! Yikes….I forgot nearly everything I wanted to say. I think it’s something you just have to work at before getting any better!

  17. Yes! I am so afraid of cool people… does that sound weird? I’m scared of putting myself out there and asking people to share their time with me. I’ve been challenging myself to do it (in a non creepy way) more than ever lately, and its still scaring the crap out of me. I feel so…. small. I dunno. Anyway, good for you!

  18. Hmm, well I’m assuming you mean other than spiders and mice! I’m afraid of trying to make my idea a reality because I think I lack the skills to make it as good in real life as it is in my head, and by doing it loose time and money that I can’t afford to part with. I’m trying to break it down into little steps to get me nearer so who knows, I may have made some progress in a year

  19. That’s great! I hate speaking on video or audio, but that’s more distaste for the sound of my own voice.
This reminds me of that great Eleanor Roosevelt quote – “Do one thing a day that scares you” (which I believe Lululemon has coopted?).
I’m unemployed (Funemployed!) this summer and it’s been a great reason to do some of those things that I don’t normally do. Not necessarily scary things, but things outside my comfort zone that I normally could easily make excuses (no time!) for not doing. Like today I’m refinishing an old dresser. Cause why not??!!

  20. I just started a blog a little over a month ago, and I’m scared to really find my voice and push myself to be different and 100% me. Venerability is a hard thing, isn’t it? I look forward to hearing what you sound like, Joy!

  21. I have been a stay home mom for over a year now. Sometime I feel lost and doesn’t know what to talk to people anymore. So I started a blog about fashion/DIY just 2 weeks ago( I major in fashion in college). Trying to find a focus in my everyday life to re-gain confidence. This is my new challenge!!

  22. a round of applause for you! i too am deathly afraid of public speaking. i don’t know where it comes from, but i freeze up and and get really red and awkward. i double high five you for leaving your comfort zone. and thanks for making me “think” about leaving mine.
    have a great weekend.

  23. I love how forcing your fears forces you to grow! Your videos will be great, and I’m sure it will put you on the next step of an amazing new journey in your path!
My fear right now is starting to blog and keep my voice genuine for my new virtual interior design business and keep up with it! I’ve had no trouble blogging on my own illustration type blog, but now it’s a new thing – but time to leap!

  24. This is a great topic. I think my greatest challenge right now is to be confident and outgoing/approachable. So that’ll be something to work on.

  25. I love your videos Joy! Definitely a nice add to the blog. I am terrified of making videos for my blog but last week a took a baby step and taped a little IG video. I said all of six words, but I did it. HELLO WORLD!
I hope to do more and longer ones 🙂

  26. Good for you! I felt exactly the same way and decided to just force myself and make an ‘about’ video for my website anyway. I had a fantastic videographer who asked me questions off camera and edited it all. I ended up even having fun! I totally agree that we need to continually push ourselves, even when it’s really uncomfortable. It’s the only way to grow.

  27. I love challenges, at least that’s what I say, but some are harder to love. For study this semester I have to organise a reading of my work and that terrifies me! Not only do I hard hearing my work read aloud, talking in front of people I don’t know well is so nerve racking.
But as much as I grumble about being forced to do it, I think even if it was an optional thing I’d made myself do it because I like to push myself and give everything my all.
