in a {hair} rut!

Oh Joy Giant Flower

Oh Joy Giant Flower

Hair is such a funny thing to me. Some people can change their hair cut, hair color, and general hair vibe every month. And some people (like me) can have the same old hair style for years. My hair is that comfy pair of shoes that you wear every single day. I don't think much about it, I just go with it. But it's way boring which is why I've been playing around with ways to do new 'do's.

With my post-baby hair shedding and just a general feeling that I need a change, I think it's time for a legit hair cut! And not just my usual "Oh, just trim off a couple inches" thing. Something new. The last time I made a major change was when I brought back my bangs about five years ago. I'm pretty sure those bangs are staying, but I want to change up the rest of it. Shorter? A lob? Some color? Some wave? I feel like options are limited with my super straight thick hair but I'm trying to be open-minded.

Here are five inspiration photos I'm loving…

wavy lob with bangs

1. I love the slight wave and the angle to this cut. It seems flirty yet not-too-perfect. Plus, her eyeliner is on point! (via Brit)

Cute cut!

2. A shorter, layered bob that might help make me look cool and French. This might be too short for my face shape, but it sure does look cute on her! (via Forum)

Lauren Conrad

3. Lots of layers and texture like LC. (via Kristen Ess)

Emma Stone

4. Emma Stone's straight and sleek lob with long layers (via Huffington Post).

Gary Pepper

5. A super short bob with some beautiful, full waves. (via Gary Pepper)

What do you guys think? Any other styles I should check out?

  1. Hard decision! They all look quite amazing! But I assume the wavy ones require some work in the morning. I have straight and heavy hair as well, I’d love some waves but it’s super difficult (and I’m too lazy to style my hair for hours). By the way, I’m reading your book at the moment and I’m loving it! x

  2. Hmm, I think Emma Stone’s haircut (with maybe slightly shorter sideswept bangs, hers are a bit long) would look great on you.
Salt sprays are good for adding some texture without dragging the curlers or curling iron out.

  3. If you want something even more different, check out this gallery of Japanese haircuts. The cuts are arranged by length.

I’ve got (half-)Asian hair, and the best haircuts I’ve ever had were done by Japanese stylists, either in Japan or North America. They understand the texture of Asian hair (obviously) and do more precise shaping and thinning of your hair than any standard Western hairstylist I’ve ever gone to. Plus you get a massage! I’m sure there are a few great Japanese salons in LA.

  4. I’ve always loved look on first pic. It’s so pretty , fresh and “girlish” , It’s easy to do and I think very comfy hair style . Such a timeless haircut…. I think it’ll be perfect for You 🙂 xoxo

  5. We’re on the same boat. I’m looking to get a haircut as well and was thinking of a long bob. The first picture would look great on you. Like you, I also have thick and straight hair.

  6. I just got my hair cut and highlights. 🙂 We have similar facial structure and I decided to go with an Emma Stone look, with bangs, so more like the first look. You can really texture it up with products if you have an extra 2 mins after shower. A short bop is tempting, but its so definite, you can always curl it up if you want shorter or pin it, so I couldn’t cut more then I few inches. Either way, exciting! Can’t wait to see your new do!

  7. i just got my haircut and it looks like #1! it’s a little bit more high maintenance but i’ve gotten a lot of compliments!

  8. hi Joy! I just got my hair cut short last Friday!! my hair used to be about your length, and sometimes with bangs sometimes without. Before I went, my inspiration was basically Emma Stone’s latest haircut (also saw this photo of her and love it), I also love LC’s and Karlie Kloss’s. I ended up deciding on a short layered bob with bangs, kinda like the 2nd one but much shorter and more layered..and I love it so much! I have straight Asian hair, and it’s really easy to take care of this short hairstyle, all I do is just to blow dry it to add some volume. I think you’d look good with all these choices. The last one is super glamorous!

  9. I recently went through the same thing! I was shedding a ton post baby and cut off 4-5 inches (A LOT for me). While I enjoyed it for a few weeks, I’m already wanting my longer back (but maybe adding bangs). Grass is always greener…
That said I love love the second cut – you could pull that off like no other!

  10. I’m totally on the same boat… i feel like I just chopped off a pound of hair last week. Can’t wait to see what you choose to do. 🙂 BTW, we have to get the babies together soon!

  11. I’m glad you’re keeping your bangs – they look great on you. I think the first cut would look great on you.

  12. Obsessed with the first and second inspos. I’ve always chopped my hair off, but I’d love to go that short one day.

  13. I’ve just spent my whole morning looking for hair inspiration and then I saw your post. We are totally on the same page. I also been itching to have a haircut. But I think the first picture would look great on you! Excited to see your new do. 🙂

  14. Anything would be cute on you! I’m interested in trying the Beylage trend and I bet that would look beautiful on you!

  15. I also pinned picture number. I dying to try bangs and love everything about that pic. I think you should try a lighter shade.

  16. I love them all, but I think the first could be effortless and fun! Maybe you can find a way to make it a little more piecey and bed-headish (is that a word?). Plus, I imagine anything that you don’t have to do much to would be ideal right about now. 🙂
I can’t wait to see pictures!

  17. They all look lovely hair styles to try. The fisrt one with a long bob seems more versatile though. When you put your hair down, it is slightly wavy bob which is cute and girlish and also it’s long enough to tie at the back – this will create a new look when you get bored of a bob.
And I also have a thick and straight hair with a bang. I am not sure if you have your bang permed but I always do because I don’t need to curl it up in the morning which saves me a lot of time.
Hope to see your pictures with new look soon 🙂

  18. I don’t mean to discourage you, but I felt the exact same way about my super long hair, and I got it chopped last October. It looked cute, but I went through major regret wishing I hadn’t cut it, and now I’m letting it grow back. Sometimes boring is best.

  19. The first is definitely my favourite. With the bangs but shorter with waves is what I imagined while reading this post. I Think it would look gorgeous on on you.

  20. Go for the lob! I am exactly the same with my hair and made the cut a few months ago and it’s the best. For me the key was having it long enough that I could still put it in a ponytail. It doesn’t feel ‘too short’ and kept the regret at bay.
