For today's Day Trip adventure, we're taking you to Highland Park! It's a historic neighborhood (that is VERY up-and-coming) in Northeast Los Angeles that has fun shops and restaurants are all in walking distance of each other. Here are a few of our favorite places to go…

Collage Coffee — First stop, coffee! This shop has a cute little walk up counter for a quick, easy coffee grab before you start your day. We got the iced latte and limeade which was had a pretty ombre effect that you mix together before drinking.

Shorthand —  After grabbing some coffee, we stopped by Shorthand—a super cute stationery store. They have fancy Japanese pens and pencils, all the stationery you could ever want, ribbons, notebooks, and more. In the back, they have a printing press where they print their own cards in house! You can also get custom cards and pencil cases, which makes for an extra special gift. Everything is so well organized and displayed so it makes it easy to find exactly what you're looking for.

Shop Merci Milo — This store is a bit hidden in the neighborhood, but not one you want to miss! Every corner of the shop is packed with colorful goodies. It's the perfect if you're looking for a gift for a little one with clothing, books, and every single toy you can dream of.

Triple Beam Pizza — It's time for lunch! As long as you're a carb eater, you have to stop by my favorite pizza place in the area, Triple Beam! They open at noon and are known for their "Roman Style" pizza. Simply show them with your hands how big of a slice you want, and then they cut a piece to your liking! It's a really fun way to eat pizza, especially if you want to sample each pizza they have and get lots of smaller slices. The Margherita is my favorite and always a great classic choice. We also love the Smoked Pancetta & Jalapeno, Asparagus, Sausage with Five Lilies, Salame, and Caramelized Onion & Goat Cheese Focaccia.

Topo — End the day with a sweet treat (and a tad more shopping) at Topo! They have a lot of vegan and gluten-free options and tasty grab-n-go snacks. We also love their kitschy and fun housewares and gifts!

  1. ok… so she kinda famous but theres this girl named Kristen Ley and she owns a shop called Thimblepress here in Jackson, MS. She does art, letterpress you name it and I think you would really like her stuff… she has a website and instagram! Worth a shot!

  2. I was very disappointed to see that you did not highlight any of the actual historic restaurants and shops in Highland Park. This area is going through increasing gentrification, and pushing out long time residents, and community members who have had shops in area for years. While these places you are focusing on are great, it would be awesome for you to shed light on the families and people who have been trying to make a living in Highland Park for decades.

  3. Hi,
I’m sorry to disappoint you and totally appreciate your feedback. We go to places that we hear about (mainly through social media). I agree that we can and should cover more spots that have been there for years and not just new spots. We cannot cover everything and really try and offer a small slice. But we will definitely keep that in mind for additional posts on the area. If you have any suggestions, we are all ears!
    Best,
    Joy
