Our New Stocking Tradition

I came up with a fun solution (and new tradition) to help everyone have something in their stocking for Christmas morning and make sure Mom isn’t the only one filling stockings…

Do you remember the amazing sketch on SNL where the mom only gets a robe?! (And how it was so funny because it was so relatable?!) Well, I’ve heard this happens with stockings, too. So, this Mom came up with a fun solution to help everyone have something in their stocking for Christmas morning and make sure Mom isn’t the only one filling stockings…

Because we often travel for the holidays to see our family, I tried to think about how we could have a special annual tradition that was just for our small family of four at home while also keeping in mind the common imbalance with stockings getting filled. So I turned it into a Secret Santa of sorts except that we all find a small gift to fill everyone’s stocking!

Between the time the stockings go up and Christmas eve, everyone puts their gift into the stocking for the other family members. The gifts should be small and not more than $10. Then, on Christmas eve (or before we leave to visit family), we open them and everyone guesses who gave them each gift as they open it! The items can be bought or handmade…it’s the thought that counts!

Everyone’s personalities shine through in the gifts they pick for each other, and it is so fun opening them together. I am so excited to have started this tradition with my family. Everyone gets really into the spirit and have already started filling them for this year.

Have you started any new traditions for your family?!

P.S. Our stockings are from St. Frank

  2. Hi! Love this idea!

Question… where are the initials tags you used to go with the stockings?

Thank you in advance and wishing you and your family a happy holidays!
