Beth and I are always having conversations with one another about our favorite magazines and how much we love them. I knew I was an avid magazine reader, but over the past few months it’s really dramatically increased (aka. gotten out of control)…let’s keep count…

MAGAZINES I ‘JUST’ SUBSCRIBED TO BECAUSE I GOT A FREE OFFER AS ‘THANK YOU’ FOR A SURVEY:

REASONS WHY I THINK IT’S OKAY TO HAVE THIS MANY MAGAZINES:
1 ~ Every few months I clear out the oldest issues by keeping only the best pages in binders
2 ~ I was never into bridal magazines before getting engaged, but now that I am engaged…I have to take in as much information as possible before I am no longer part of the “bride-to-be” market
3 ~ I can write them off on my taxes as “research & supplies”
4 ~ It’s part of my job to keep up on trends, design, fashion, etc…
Tell me your list of magazines and make me feel better…
That’s a lot of magazines! I usually stick to UK magazines (bought Feb Vogue UK) because there are many UK highstreet retail shops here in Singapore. I also love ELLE UK for their fun and fresh articles. I’ve always believed that you can tell the taste (or direction) of the magazine by looking at their music section, and for that, I love Nylon. That’s about all I read. I would love to have as many magazines as you do (I like Shop ETC’s pictures!) but it’s going to be too costly for me ๐ Imported magazines are especially expensive.
that is a lot of magazines. i love magazines and used to subscribe to a bunch but now i’ve pared down a little.
but i do subscribe to: domino, marthastewart living, interweave knits, vogue knitting, home companion and lucky (when it expires i’m letting this one go).
i purchase magazines often although not every issue: martha stewart kids, every day foods, country home, country living, cottage living and the occasional specialty design publication put out by bhg, other knitting magazines such as vogue knit.1. in style, people upon occasion (especially when i have nothing to read for the train).
unlike you though, i’m a hoarder and i have a hard time getting rid of old magazines or cutting them up.
and unlike you, i need them for my commute not for my job. ha.
Blimey! Your purse must get some abuse!
magazines are highly addictive ๐
so no bad conscience, itยดs not our fault…there are just too many good magazines!!
I only get MS Living and it is a gift. But I’d love to subscribe to all the magazines you get, so don’t feel bad.
I’d love to get your old mags ๐
I have 22 magazine subscriptions, because I love magazines and theyโre cheap on ebay.
1. House and Garden. 2. House Beautiful 3. Elle Decor 4. Domino 5. Martha Stewart Living 6. Essence 7. O 8. Elle 9. Vogue 10. Harpers Bazaar 11. Dwell 12. Sunset 13. New York 14. Allure 15. Marie Claire 16. Bon Appetit 17. Cooks Illustrated 18. Patchwork Quilt Tsushin 19. Country Home 20. Country Living 21. Metropolitan Home 22. In Style
I repeat: Magazine subscriptions can be very cheap on ebay.
i’m right there with you and they are all purchased by yours truly…
shop, etc, lucky, domino, glamour, martha stewart living, martha stewart everyday food, real simple, print, BKLYN, new york time out, new york magazine, macaddict, machome, macworld
Hello all!
Thanks for your comments! I love that some of you read a lot like I do! I have to say it’s been my one splurge as of late – no clothes, no shoes, no bags….at least I can read about them, right?
AJ – I had no idea about subscriptions on ebay. very cool.
I love magazines..they seems like such a luxury, and especially when they are delivered to your door!! My favourites are..Elle Decoration UK, Elle deco (french edition), Selvedge, Vogue UK, Red magazine, Crafts, Metalsmith, InStyle, Scottish Homes and Interiors, Homes and Antiques, and several trashy unmentionables as well!! I manage to convince myself its all okay, as its for my work (jeweller), and its my one main vice! ๐
I have the exact same problem… and I think it’s perfectly OK, too. It brings me much happiness when I open my mailbox and see a fresh issue waiting for me.
I’m trying to get into the habit of clearing them out every couple of months. I have a file box with many, many folders to put the clippings I keep in. I did get rid of a lot of old magazines when I moved but I have a hard time getting rid of certain ones… like Vogue, Elle, W, Living Etc., Elle Decor, & Domino. Those I like to keep intact in magazines holders. But at some point(probably soon) I’ll have to start letting those go too.
Unless I win the lottery and can afford to buy a building to renovate as live/work space… then I’ll have a magazine archive room. Hee.
mia,
i totally know what you mean about the archive room (and the fresh issue in the mailbox)…some issues are really hard to let go if even if you save the good pages! i found that a really helpful thing with the tear-outs is to put them in clear sleeves in a 3-ring binder. then when you want to look through it’s much easier than having piles of individual pages!
Ok. This seems to fun not to comment on. I don’t subscribe to any magazines because of a hellacious experience I had once trying to unsubscribe. I do find that I periodically pick up Real Simple, Domino, Lucky, Nylon, BUST, Giant Robot (I love Giant Robot!), Sunset, Elle, Bazaar. And have you seen the Vogue Living from Australia? It’s beautiful. But oh so expensive here in the states. Now that I see my list in print, I think I’m out of control too.
i get your magazine fixation
not as committed to magazine subscriptions as you are, but i’m big on Glamour, subscribe to Flare (Canadian .. got a special offer through my cellphone company), and read a lot of South Asian based mags – AsianWoman, Suhaag (weddings), Anokhi Vibe

I have the same problem, too… that’s why I stay away from subscriptions, instead I buy different magazines each month. But the problem now, sometimes I could buy 2 or 3 magazines in a month! ๐
I’ve been wanting to put them on binders, but it’s just so hard to let go the pages…
Looks like we are all guilty of killing a few trees! I also get a ton of magazines every month, sometimes I think my mailbox is going to pull right off the wall its so full and heavy.

Really enjoying this blog, Joy. I have been reading for about a month and check it everytime my mind wanders at work, which is a lot. LOL
I wish I could have that many magazines! In Norway a year of Elle costs about $100. One issue of Vogue is about $20. It’s so expencive the only magazine I subscribe to is Elle, but I pick up Vogue, iD and some other magazines from time to time. If it didn’t cost as much I swear my list would look like yours!
you are not alone….
ahhh! so nice to know i’m not the only magazine addict!!! thank you joy! and thanks for the book recommendation. i’m in the process of trying to decide exactly why i want my business to be…and to find an appropriate partner. your site has been very inspirational.

it is perfectly normal to have this many magazines (at least i would like to think so!) my problem is i buy from the newsstand way way too much, but the thing is when i subscribe to a magazaine it never fails that i see people (especially in new york) reading my magazine long before it appears in my mailbox. now, when this happens i am prone to go into an unadulterated rage (what can i say i love my magazine!)

(4) Vanity Fair

(6) The New Yorker (which I may cancel)
(7) Marie Claire (also may be cancelled)
(8) Conde Nast Traveler (gift)
I love to buy celebrity mags (may end up subscribing to just one as it’s cheaper), any fashion mags. I’ll pick up the abandoned magazines at the gym.
You could also try magazinepricesearch.com for cheap deals. Tt searches the best price for you, but the downside is the subscription takes 8-12 weeks to start.
Domino. Need I say more. ๐
Also, get your subs on ebay – I subbed to several magazines for like $12 for 3 years subscriptions. Amazingly low prices. Totally legit.
I buy all the same ones listed above, so I won’t bore anyone with repeating a list. But, to add to it, check out Canadian House + Home and Ideal Home (UK). Great publications. I have a bunch of German and French magazines but you won’t enjoy them unless you speak the language because they’re more content oriented than visual.

fresh finds for hip spaces.
interior design blog.
picked fresh daily at:

I used to subscribe to like 20 magazines, then I decided that I could have used the money for actual CLOTHES…blegh!
And then I discovered the PUBLIC LIBRARY! I go there once a week and read all their fashion magazines, and sometimes I borrow the backcopies for a more detailed read.
it’s FREE! and it kind of controls the time (and money)-consuming-ness of 20 subscriptions.
Don’t you just love Living, Etc.? It’s great! Oh, and don’t forget Readymade!
I’m also in love with magaziness and recently I’ve moved from the U.S. to Australia, so I have a whole new outlook on life…
1. Monster Children
2. Frankie
3. Yen
4. Russh
5. Doingbird #10
6. Riot
I really miss Jane and Lucky, but these are pretty amazing mags.
