When I lived in Philly, one of my favorite treats was not a cupcake…but a Belgian sugar waffle from Bonté. Each waffle is made to order {with your choice of ingredients} in an old fashioned waffle iron in the same style the gaufré {sugar waffle} would be prepared and sold on the streets of Brussels. My favorite combination {shown here} is banana and walnut which makes me feel okay about having one for breakfast. But I also love a chocolate & strawberry version come dessert-time! — Joy

WOW. I am so hungry now! I actually have a waffle recipe I was going to make soon… maybe I should use this as inspiration to add a few extra ingredients!
aw i miss this place! i used to work half a block from a bonte and always treated myself to one of these. at first i scoffed at their small size, but then i realized how dense and satisfying they were!
Bonte is ridiculously good. I usually burn myself on the waffles because they are so damn hot when you get them, but it’s really hard to wait to eat them!
Mmmmmm. Must get one today.
That looks scrumptious!
Yum! What a delicious combination.
You’ve reminded me that my mother has a waffle iron [in Australia we call them jaffles] and I’m going to have to snaffle it!

Hi Joy! Just stumbled upon your blog and am now an avid fan 🙂
I don’t know if you’ve heard of it before, but in Orange, CA by Chapman University, where i’m a graphic design student, there’s a new restaurant called Bruxie that sells amazing Brussels & Liege Sugar Waffles as well as delicious waffle sandwiches! A lot of people have come down from LA to sample some Bruxie so if you’re ever in the neighborhood (approx 20-40 minute drive) you should definitely try it! 🙂
Hi Ivana,
Thanks so much! Ive got to try it! 😉
Best,
Joy
I can’t believe I missed these waffles when I worked in Philly for over 6 months!
Awe, even though I was in school and poor, I used to treat myself every so often and it was totally yummy.
It’s a gaufre, without the diacritic on the final e (it would transform it to /goh-fray/ more or less and it’s actually /goh-fr/)
But it’s MUCH more lovely on your picture than the one I used to have in Brussels, heh.
after going to Belgium a few years ago with my parents, we were smitten with these waffles. my dad bought the little sugar bits while we were over there – boxes of them. now he makes them on special occasions and when we have family over. i love them hot and by themselves, but sometimes we will put a little belgian chocolate on them – to DIE FOR!
I have never wanted to eat something so much!
ahhh! I don’t know how I’ve lived in Philly so long without trying one of these. We just went for the first time last week and I’ve already been back with the whole family. We are all addicted now (especially with ice cream!).
I love waffles too! We usually eat waffles with a scoop of icecream and some whipped cream on top. We hardly eat it just as it is in Singapore.
