happy friday + putting our best foot forward…

Oh Joy flowers

Oh Joy flowers

Happy Friday friends! Lately, I've been thinking a lot about the little examples we set in our daily lives. Because Ruby is at the age where she repeats everything we say and do, we have to be super cautious not to say bad words, be sarcastic, or show behaviors that we don't want her to emulate. She'll cross her arms in front of her chest because she is mimicking how I always cross my arms. I didn't even realize how much I do it myself until I see her acting like "mama".

It's funny to think about the small things you do that you don't even realize that others pick up on. Whether it's thanking someone for a simple task, having a positive outlook even if we don't feel 100% positive that day, or sitting up a little straighter to show that we're confident about what we're doing. It's those little things that count…

Have a great weekend guys!

P.S. If you haven't watched this Ted talk yet, you must…

  1. I guess I’m far more polite than I give myself credit for then. My girls are really polite and I don’t recall actually teaching them to be. It’s funny though, my eldest did go through a phase of calling her dad Handsome because I call him that.

  2. a little one around makes you want to be the best you can be I would think. I try to be encouraging and not go directly to a negative place when I’m around others. I know how much it means to me when ppl are nice and look on the bright side and how hard it is to be around ppl that are constantly negative

  3. That picture is beautiful, I love the flowers! I think it will be interesting to see what my kids imitate with me… Haha hopefully it is good! It is definitely a great thing to be positive and confident!! Thank you for the thoughts

  4. Reading along with your journey is so amazing I have a daughter about your age, and I’m also a freelancer illustrator, designer…It’s as if I wrote many of your posts lol thanks! laura

  5. Thanks for the reminder. I have a little one at home who is just on the cusp of a budding vocabulary and I know any day he’ll be repeating everything we say. And also thanks for the link to the great video. What a great message 🙂
    Have a wonderful week,
    Jenn

  6. My little girl (20 months) is just starting to copy everything i do, too! my son (age 3) has been doing it for a while, so i already sort of am conscious about it, but if she sees me putting on makeup, or other little things, she always wants to do it! it’s cute how little kids are so influenced by what they see/hear but we have to be careful as influencers!
just saw that ted talk yesterday. loved it so much. love that she integrates humor into her talk!

  7. Love the blog and this post!
I used to be a teacher years ago, before I fell into the world of design. Being around really young kids made me very aware of all the things that people do daily that sends out all sorts of messages to others. I can honestly say being around kids made me a better and more thoughtful person.

  8. Gosh, what a wonderful reminder to always think about the impression you’re leaving on people. Thanks little Ruby for the little life lesson!x

  9. good call! My hubby can be very sarcastic at times and my 9yr old son has picked up on this and does it too…very frustrating!
they say dont be afraid that your children dont listen to you, be afraid that they are watching you!
