What say you? Cookie butter? Yes, friends, it's true. There is a thing called cookie butter which I discovered over the weekend and am currently in love with. My friend Caroline suggested it, and I'm sort of eating it by the spoonful now. Inspired by the Dutch & Belgian Speculoos spread, the cookie butter from Trader Joe's has the look and consistency of peanut butter but tasty like gingerbread biscuits in a spreadable form. It's like comfort and Christmas in a jar. Someone on Twitter suggested adding a touch of sea salt, which adds a nice contrast to the sweetness to the cookie butter on top of toast. Yum! — Joy

YUM is right. spreadable gingerbread cookies? must try.
Oh this looks delish. But doubt very much we can get it here in London.
My hips are so lucky we don’t have a Trader Joe’s in Toronto.
I am still in shock that this exists, and that I do not have any yet.
Wow…this sounds amazing. No Trader Joe’s here in Canada, but oh my I’d try this for sure…
this was invented in my country!! belgium!! we call it “speculaaspasta” >> which basically means speculoos paste :))
He he, it’s like sin in a jar. Too bad (or not?) it’s difficult to find it here in Crete! xoxo
Shaky Alibi in Los Angeles serves THE BEST speculoos slathered liege waffles. My mom insists we eat there every time she visits. Apparently speculoos gelato is in the works there too.
I am picking this up today!! I am thinking maybe some pretzels and chocolate too! Mmmm
I had no idea this existed. Sounds incredible.
Sounds delicious! What other things might it be good on? Fruit?
yummy, yes please!
The original of this has existed for a looong time!
@Josie – You won’t be able to get Trader Joe’s version, but you surely should be able to get the Lotus brand Speculoos spread from Belgium. In the US the Lotus brand is sold as Biscoff spread.
Say whaaat?! TJ’s does it again. Must get myself a jar when I’m back in the States…
That’s so funny . . . I just posted about Cookie Butter as well! It’s sooo good!
The Lotus brand biscoff spread is sold at some Albertsons. It’s pricey though since it’s imported. I’m looking forward to trying to TJ’s version!
I saw a very similar one at Henry’s Market last week… do you have those in LA? If you have ever flown on a Delta flight, they give you Biscoff cookies. It was Biscoff cookie butter! Going to have to try it : )
SO delicious sounding and dangerous all at once!
I just saw that at TJ’s the other day and I was like “What? that sounds dangerous.” So I didn’t buy any. I really want to try it now though!
WTF? Sign me up! In reality, I, too am glad I don’t have a trader joe’s.
I LOVE speculoos! It has trumped my love for dulce de leche.
If you haven’t already, whenever you swing by NYC again, you must try the Wafles and Dinges truck get the liegewafel with speculoos maybe some sliced strawberries. Crispy chewy cinnamon gingery caramel-y goodness.
Amorino also has a speculoos flavor gelato!
Yes….please.
Oh goodness, I’m going to need to drop by Trader Joe’s today!
Haven’t seen this at the NYC TJ’s yet but MUST TRY.
oh i fell in love with this stuff in belgium, it’s amazing. i couldn’t bring myself to finish the jar and now it’s gone to waste!
after reading your post, i went to TJ’s and bought a jar. i’m eating it now with multigrain crackers and i…can’t…STOP! it doesn’t help that i’m 38 weeks pregnant!
thank you? 🙂
I fell in love with speculoos cookies in belgium few years ago… and now, we always have at home this wonderful cookie paste for breakfast… (Lotus brand) miam!! (from a candy store, here in Montreal…)
Oh, I didn’t know TJ’s had this! It looks like it’s their spin on this: http://www.biscoff.com/DirectionsWEB/webcart_static.php?file=static_biscoffSpread.html, which I first had as a waffle topping here: http://www.waffallonia.com/ (<-- waffallonia is ah-maze-ing btw). SO GOOD. You really must try it on waffles. It's fantastic on ice cream too!
ha! we both posted about this yesterday, isn’t it amazing? i am addicted to this stuff.

They sell this in Paris Fran Prix’s!! Switched it out with Nutella for my guilty pleasure petit dej.
I’m going to try this. I love most of TJ’s products.
It’s delicious on Belgian waffles.
So good! I bought a jar and have been trying not to eat it all!
Kat is right, Speculoos Paste is not a dutch invention, it comes from Belgium. And we’re proud of it too.
Ahh. My grandmother (who we all called Grossie, ’cause yeah, German) made spekulatius/”speks”. And did I get the recipe family before It Was Too Late? No.
Thank you, Trader Joe’s.
Oh yum! I love the Biscoff version–you can buy it at World Market and Fresh & Easy. Not cheap at just under $5, but it’s worth the indulgence!
i am eating Cookie Butter as we speak…this is bottle #2 in 2 weeks. this stuff is great! really great because my son and i are allergic to peanut butter.
got it, LOVE it !!!
Was reading this thinking “WHERE am I going to find this??” Then I read the magic words… Trader. Joes. YES.
Had this in New York from Waffles and Dinges Truck. They serve their amazing waffles with this spread. Nice with a little chocolate and some whipped cream!
Spredable cookie dough is how I describe it. Me and my co-workers were on Trader Joe’s impulse buying visit (good after a long day at work) when I saw this. We grabbed some coffee stirrers from the nearest Starbucks and dug in. Oh man…. Went back a week later – it was sold out and the Trader Joe’s employee said he didn’t know when it was going to be back in!
Wow! I need this…
So sad…after 3 jars in 3 weeks I went back to TJ’s this morning and they are all sold out! Will have to try some of the other brands mentioned here. It is soooooo good by the spooful!
I just scored one of the last two jars at TJ’s. The fellow who helped me find it told me I’d regret it if I didn’t buy both jars. I fear he may have been right….
Lara,
Too funny! Well, glad you got one!!

I live in Amsterdam and Speculoos are a common type of cookie here, but I’ve never seen the butter!! Looks incredible!
I found cookie butter a few months ago at my local Trader Joes .
I instantly fell in love. Got my friends addicted as well. They went out and bought there own and sent me texts showing that they were enjoying there own special jar.
But now we are all out and every trader Joes is out and has been out for a few weeks now. And have no idea when they are getting more. We are all waiting patiently for the words most delicious treat. Cookie butter Yummm. Coooooookies ( said like cookie monster on seseame street hehhe )
OMG! This is amazing and now eating by the spoonful. LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!
I spread it on bread and top with thinly sliced apples or bananas. So yummy and actually as long as you watch your portion (1 TBSP) it isn;t really bad- only 2 points for Weight Watchers 🙂
But it is made in The Netherlands — you should be able to get it.
what store in montreal? i’ve been looking everywhere
Looks tasty!mm
